Exclusive Interview: We’re Going Absolutely ‘foolish’ Over Jake Brewer

We had the absolute pleasure of chatting with Jake Brewer about his newest track, ‘foolish,’ as well as the details of his EP for her eyes only. 👀 Unfortunately, we couldn’t keep this interview for our eyes only, because we were just too excited to share it with you all! From a secret Sabrina Carpenter crush 😍 to the complexities of falling in love, Jake gets vulnerable and gives us some real advice.

New Jake Brewer fan or not, he can’t wait to share his plans for 2024!

Congrats on your newest single, ‘foolish!’ Who or what inspires you to write songs like ‘foolish?’
Thank you! I took a lot of the past year or so to expand how I write. It’s easiest to pull from past experiences, but with ‘foolish’ and the new EP, for her eyes only, I was hung up on why I was still thinking about those experiences. This song especially is one of my favorites because as energetic as it is, the heart of the song is realizing there’s no need for “if’s” when there’s nothing you can change now. Ultimately, what you remember about something most profoundly is up to you. What I love about writing is hiding these larger, universal ideas in an up-tempo song that feels, at first listen, easily understood. The more you listen, the more you can uncover. It’s almost like a puzzle for listeners – and I can promise, there’s plenty to find.

What are your biggest goals for 2024? Any New Year’s resolutions?
The EP I released a couple months ago was created with the idea of a live show alongside it. I grew up performing and have been on stages since kindergarten, so getting the chance to craft what a “Jake Brewer show” really is is what I’m especially looking forward to. Beyond that, I’m craving to experience new things. It’s easy to push yourself when you can rationalize things with “Do it for a good song!”

I think most people can relate to the themes presented in ‘foolish,’ especially that of falling in and out of love. If you could give one piece of relationship advice to your listeners, what would it be?
The best piece of advice I have is work on your relationship with yourself before and as much as your relationships with others. You’ll be better equipped to navigate any relationship when you have trust and security in yourself. It can feel selfish, but it’ll be a gift to those you care about most, too. Writing this EP definitely helped me find a lot of closure and comfort in the way I navigate relationships.

What is your love language, and how do you bring this into your music/songwriting?
I’m definitely a big “acts of service” and “words of affirmation” person. Whether intentional or not, I think my tendency to be indecisive in my perspective comes across in my writing. I also think it’s where my signature comes into it – how the “what if’s” can drive us (me) mad when affirmation or effort is felt in the way I need.

What was your most ‘foolish’ moment of 2023?
My friends know I have the biggest crush on Sabrina Carpenter. Let’s just say there’s a moment I dropped the ball there.

We loved this music video and appreciated how real and raw it is. What was the most memorable part of filming the ‘foolish’ music video?
The ‘foolish’ video was one of the largest projects I’ve ever done. It was a real honor to finally work with my friend Jake Schwencke who beautifully interpreted and expanded upon the story in the song. We sat in my favorite coffee shop in the East Village back in October and he pitched to me a story that felt so true to the original idea while also expanding upon it. I love how when you watch the video neither person seems more “right” than the other. As a viewer, you have a third-party perspective to simply accept that sometimes things don’t work and nobody is at fault.

Also, seeing so many skill sets from so many people be devoted to a project of mine was such a gift. From having friends fill party scenes, to twenty takes of throwing confetti in the freezing cold, to working with Julia on how we were going to dance in new settings were all moments that reminded me how lucky I am to have creative opportunities, but also to share them with people who love it as much as I do.

Anything else you’d like to tell fans, or future fans who are reading about you for the first time about? What can fans expect from Jake Brewer in the upcoming months?
I love to surprise you. I’m pouring more of myself, more intention, and more ambition into everything I do now. I love being creative not only with the music and content itself, but how I’m delivering it to you. I took a chance being so personal and niche on this EP, but connecting over those lyrics with people around the world has been something I’m still in awe of.
