Friday is our favorite day here at The Honey POP! We’re extra hyped because one of our favorite bands, The Scarlet Opera just released a new song! ‘Catch Me If You Can’ is a captivating, high energy track that kicks off their new era with a bang. Not only are we listening to it on repeat, but we also have an exclusive interview with The Scarlet Opera’s lead singer, Luka Bazulka! We talk all about their new single, ‘Catch Me If You Can,’ their upcoming tour, and more. Let’s jump right in!
Hello and welcome to The Honey POP! We’re so excited to have you. Could you introduce yourselves for our readers who might not be familiar with your music?
HI! I’m Luka, lead singer of The Scarlet Opera. We’ve been a band for about 8 years hailing from Los Angeles. We really only started putting out music a year ago, and now we’re about to release our second EP. We’re deeming it “regal-rock.” It’s a fun time!
We absolutely love your new single, ‘Catch Me If You Can’ What was the inspiration behind it?
Oh goodness! Well, it’s not really so much about being jaded, but it is about sort of overcoming people’s doubts about you (as a person, as an artist, as a band.) I think what we wanted to achieve with this in a very sort-of childish way sort of taunt those people saying “We’re headed to the top without you. We’re on our way, so keep up!” So that’s really what the song is about.
Do you have a favorite lyric from it?
It would probably be in the second verse: “Mirror, mirror, please don’t watch me cut my ties.” I felt like that was a very theatrical way of saying I was moving on from a past version of myself to step into this new role as someone who doesn’t really give a f*ck anymore.
Last year, you released your debut EP, Comedy. Has that shaped your writing or recording process since then?
I feel like we really found a foundation with Comedy and it was really fun to be whimsical. I feel like this next EP is a bit of a sister EP to that one… sort of a more confident, grounded, gritty version of Comedy, and the character that that created. But even now in the new writing sessions that we’re in, its become even more real, and tangible, but still just as epic and flamboyant.
You’re going on tour soon, which is so exciting! Last April, you went on tour for the first time ever. Do you have a favorite tour memory?
Oh my god, so many. I’m so ready to get back out on the road, it’s so annoying to have been still for so long. My favorite tour memory that I can think of is honestly the nights on the tour bus where we would finish a show and Gary our bus driver would be getting everything ready to head out to the next city, and I just really loved the moments where the boys and I would sit in the living room area and I’d pop an edible and pour a glass of wine and the boys and I would just watch scary movies and laugh, and kind of revel in what we had done. It felt like magic, just a little family on the bus. It was really special, I’m excited for more of those nights.
Can you give us any hints of what to expect for the Catch Me If You Can tour?
Well, more theater! *laughs* Of course a grand entrance. We’re building some set pieces, I mean don’t hold me to it but if everything goes according to plan there should be some nods to some really old classic theatrical elements. Expect to be thrilled!
If you could play at any venue in the world, which one would it be and why?
I think Music Fest in Allentown, PA. I’ve gone to that every year when I was a kid and I remember seeing some really big artists there. It’s not necessarily the one people usually go for but it would mean a lot to me, it would be a bit of a homecoming to go back there and play that.
We believe in the power of manifestation. If you could speak one thing into existence for your band, what would it be?
Right now, I feel like I’d like to manifest sort of like really owning this new power that we’ve stepped into. I’d like to manifest stadium/arena tours. And I’d like to manifest making a lot more friends on the way. That last tour we genuinely made some friends, and I just thought about how I’m not a huge fan of idolatry as much as I might’ve been when I was a kid, now just really meeting people and hearing stories from our fans has been really inspiring. That’s really all I’m interested in right now is making more friends.
Last question. Just because we love spreading positivity and being sweet like honey, what is one sweet thing you can say about one another?
I think that I’m very fortunate to be surrounded by these boys that are very emotionally intelligent and really keep me grounded. Honestly, in the past couple of months it’s been a bit rough dealing with some personal things, and they’ve lifted me up time and time again. It’s not something you can really pay for. We’ve built a family relationship over the last 8 years and so I’m very lucky to have them.
We’d like to thank Luka for taking the time to chat with us! If you haven’t already, be sure to get tickets to ‘catch’ them on their upcoming tour! What was your favorite part of the interview?
