Close out of Google Images for a second and hide your Instagram account. Let’s play a guessing game! We first require you to shut your eyes—absolutely no peeking between the tweeny slots of your fingers. Now, visualize cascading dark-cholate hair, wispy strands falling onto hollow cheekbones, connecting to slanting noses (“I can make it tiny like a little elven princess,” one of them says on Call Her Daddy when talking about contouring. Exactly, that’s a clue) and full glossed lips. Perhaps now blue hooded eyes. Who comes to mind? Though to be fair, this game was always rigged from the start. Yes, it’s all in the article’s title because we’re describing Madison Beer and her 12-year-apart doppelganger with the interlacing quote, Megan Fox! With seemingly only one facial feature separating yet the same distinct aura, these two are so similar that even Twitter thinks they’re cousins.
And it’s either that Madison Beer believes that we’re all onto something, or Jennifer’s Body is one of her all-time favorite movies because her music video for ‘Make You Mine’ looks like a scrapbook covered in all its iconic scenes. For those who don’t allow Jennifer Check to inhabit them every Halloween (less in alignment with the lead singer of your favorite band self-sacrificing you in the woods like in the flick and more so hunting for a red-hearted pink zipped-up jumper from your local op shop), she’s basically a high school cheerleader turned succubus. She lures jocks to the woods and then snacks on them, all with woodland creatures surrounding them.
Case File: Succubus
Currently, Madison is the chair of the campaigning for a younger generation to watch Jennifer’s Body committee since it came out in 2009! And yes, if you belong to the early 2000s just like us, we’re definitely not okay with this statistic. That’s a total of 15 years since the movie came out. Hence, the demonic spawning has begun, and new, freshly alluring baby succubuses emerge from the hellscape coven. So we thought we’d get you all freshened up, developing our own villain profile for ‘Make You Mine!’ That way, if you encounter Madison, you’ll know exactly how to not get snatched up unless you want to.
Powers: Seduction — “Step inside my mind / You can see the shrine”
It makes sense that seduction is the key to being a succubus. From the minute the visuals open up, Madison’s electronic siren-like lilt, almost playing as if a subliminal recording with repeated voice loops, makes her about-to-be feast obsessed with her. This scene replicates one of Jennifer’s Body opening moments with Needy, a blonde through Amanda Seyfried, and here, a redhead with the sort of messy fringe that would tease out with a barrel-round brush. That’s Sadie Scheufler! Madison copies Megan’s or er Jennifer’s, whichever way you want to see this meta-moment, wave to Needy/Sadie. But there’s also a boy with pierced ears and a stunned, slackened jaw played by Nikolaos Madouras, captived by the same spell.
Eternal Youth — “See it in my eyes / How they never lie”
Your eyes aren’t mistaken if they’re catching onto a giant, block-lettered “MYM” stitched onto the front of Madison’s cheerleading crop in white, contrasting its navy background! The acronym obviously represents ‘Make You Mine.’ But it’s a cool addition to succubuses’ second power: eternal youth. Not only are they immortal but downright pretty, and obviously, every head cheerleader comes with an envious wardrobe! Some of the looks from the music video are also a straight-up reference to Jennifer’s Body, such as the long-sleeved top and skirt combo, though leading slightly astray with its own version. It’s cool that they’ve flipped this in a way while still paying tribute, as it’s both modernizing and customizing it to Madison’s preferences.
Weakness: Starvation — “I wanna feel the rush, I wanna taste the crush”
What’s totally not cool for a succubus? Their influencer-worthy looks deteriorating over time, each second drawn out by a lack of feed because starvation is one way to make them weak! Although there isn’t a smack-on reference to this in ‘Make You Mine,’ there is almost one if we squint. Alright, we’re calling for y’all to truly squint, but stay with us!
We’re skipping to the music video’s ending with its dark blue moody lightning and a “The End” scrawled onto Madison’s towel with what we presume is blood. This doesn’t help our case. We get that! But what does lingers out of the pool’s sound system, eerily in the background, a suspenseful Easter egg if you will. Since it sounds like a Lofi version of Madison’s vocals, we’re presuming this is a hint to the next single of the new era, even though she is technically on tour right now for the Silence Between Songs album. We digress. Our gal’s creative and doesn’t stop creating. This track could almost be a flip to the obsessive, crush-worthy feelings, alluding to the unrequited love of sorts. And a succubus can’t feed if the person isn’t obsessed with her.
History Of Encounters
It isn’t a genuine callback to a horror movie without the spinetingling aesthetic of watching the character you’ve spent an hour loving end up splattered on the carpet! Madison refers to the scene in Jennifer’s Body at Melody Lane where the girls see Low Shoulder. She does so by dancing with Sadie’s character under the intoxication of club lights. The jock also happens to be there, her luring him in, and then there’s the flit of those unholy eyes, and he ends up dead in the high school’s changing rooms. There’s also another reference tie-in at the end to conversion, a third power of Jennifer’s where she can pass on some of her demonic juice.
Contingency Plan
You’ve imagined us with a PowerPoint stick in hand, going through the succubus 101, haven’t you? While it doesn’t come with a pop quiz, we will ensure there isn’t a kissable stain on your neck, leaking with blood! Therefore, an exit strategy. Needy realizes toward the end of Jennifer’s Body that the thing keeping her friend tied to the current world despite being dead is a sentimental object: their friendship necklaces. Madison also cites having a pendant chain around her neck. Although it doesn’t have “BFF” on hers and “Forever” on Sadie’s as hers, as one is heart-shaped and the other is just a silver-scrawling word.
Which succubus power, seen in Madison’s music video, would you most bagsie as a ‘Make You Mine?’ Let us know on our Twitter @thehoneypop. Remember, we’re less likely to channel Needy’s realization, exorcising all of the “she’s eating boys” out of us! Instead, we will use our succubus powers for good, like alluring the hypnotic hit to be on top of the charts through streaming nonstop until we finally hear it on our stopover of The Spinning Tour!
