The Interview
Hi Emmy, thank you so much for chatting with us! For those unfamiliar with you, could you give a brief intro about yourself?
Hi, I’m Emmy Meli, I’m 24 years old, I’m from Long Beach California, and I am an R&B/ pop singer. Music has been my life’s work, so I’m honored to be speaking with you today!
Your new EP, Hello Stranger, is now out in the world! What are you hoping fans will take away from the album?
I’m hoping my fans will walk away from the EP feeling seen, heard, understood, and lighter. I genuinely hope people can laugh, cry, scream, and dance to this project, as well as grow with me through the progression of it.
When writing the EP, what was your favorite song and what is your favorite now that it’s almost released?
My favorite song while creating the EP was definitely ‘Hands Off Me,’ I believe it to be a sonic representation of my soul. That being said, now that it’s out I’d say that my favorite song is ‘Dear Little Me’ because of its message. Putting this project out finally is like giving my younger self a pat on the back, and that’s exactly what that song is. This is for her.
Hello Stranger takes us on a journey over the last seven years of your life. How did the concept of the EP come about or was it a natural progression from your hit single, ‘I AM WOMAN?’
Honestly, it was a natural progression. I came into the studio with a posterboard full of all the shit that happened to me, how it translates to music, and what I want it to sound like. The rest of it just kind of fell into place and it was beautiful.
You are currently on The Bleeding Hearts Tour where you are opening for Alexander Stewart. What are you most excited about with this tour? What can fans expect from your set?
I am honestly most excited to finally connect with fans face to face again. Those small moments with them mean the most to me and keep me going because, at the end of the day, it’s all for them. As far as what they can expect– they can expect a brand new fresh show and new music!
We always love getting a peek behind the scenes during the writing process. During the writing/recording process of Hello Stranger, what are one or two moments that stand out to you?
The first moment was the day we wrote ‘Dear Little Me.’ It was emotional, difficult, beautiful, and very special. I waited for the right moment for that song and the room was very carefully hand-picked and full of safety and warmth. I cried a lot. The second moment was the day we got strings on ‘Hands Off Me.’ I cried then too because until that point I’d never heard a song of mine that felt so true to my artistry and heart.
As mentioned before, each of these tracks take us on a journey or through an emotion from the past seven years of your life. Which one do you feel sticks out to you at this moment? Which were you excited for when you set the release date?
Right now ‘Aura’ sticks out to me because it’s getting a lot of love, but before the release, it was definitely ‘Hands off Me’ / ‘Dear Little Me’ because of my emotional connections to those songs.
You’ve gotten to work with a variety of people on this EP, from creative direction of the photography/media behind the album all the way to the production of the songs, how did you form this team around you?
I trusted my gut, truthfully. Through trial and error, I weeded out people who didn’t have my best interest at heart and welcomed the idea of a team that would understand my vision. I was patient and waited until those folks came around and when I met them, I knew instantaneously. Always trust your gut.
We are sadly coming to the end of the interview, is there anything else that you would like your fans, new and old, to know?
I want them to know that I love them, that they should never stop dreaming and being unique, and that I have a ton of new music for them!!!
It was so nice to finally get to sit down and talk with Emmy about her new EP, Hello Stranger, being on tour with Alexander Stewart, and what she hopes fans will take away from this body of work.
