‘History of Man’
This song is one of Maisie’s most popular, and not without reason! ‘History of Man’ is a lyrical masterpiece. The track is a ballad of gender dynamics, vulnerability, and the complexities of love, riddled with metaphors from the Bible and Greek Mythology, showcasing Maisie’s undeniable songwriting abilities. The song is backed by soft but haunting instruments, highlighting Maisie’s powerful yet soothing vocals.
Hard-hitting lyrics like “He stole our youth and promised heaven / The men start wars yet Troy hates Helen / Women’s hearts are lethal weapons / Did you hold mine and feel threatened?” are a clever play on double meanings, showing how women have often been portrayed as villains by men, in both real-life stories and fiction. The way in which Maisie Peters’ lyrical genius and emotional depth shine through in this song is sure to make this track your newest great obsession.
‘Body Better’
Sharing feelings we can relate to, ‘Body Better’ is a reflection on the raw complexities of heartbreak and self-doubt after having a partner be unfaithful. Although the title may allude to different themes, the song does not disappoint. This track is laced with subtle jabs such as “How’s it feel to have made me cry?” and “Were you sorry like you weren’t at the time?” channeling Maisie’s inner angst.
Similar to many of Maisie’s songs, this track is very vocal forward, and we aren’t complaining! ‘Body Better’ perfectly blends the singer’s vulnerable lyricism with an upbeat synth-pop sound. This song was the lead single from The Good Witch and sets up the era of feminine rage perfectly!
‘BSC’
Another Maisie staple, ‘BSC’, which stands for batsh*t crazy, strays from her usual style. Several moments of this song are marked by heavy synthy instrumentals but still showcase Maisie’s powerful vocals. This track serves as a snarky f*ck you to a toxic ex and is once again chalked full of pop culture references. ‘BSC’ allows Maisie to lean into the “crazy ex-girlfriend” character and unleash her frustrations. The song is brutally honest, with Maisie admitting “I am unhinged” (I mean, aren’t we all) and “Mister ‘I don’t want a label’ You made me little miss unstable.”
Like most songs on The Good Witch, ‘BSC’ is an anthem for feminine rage that has us wanting to scream every word.
‘You Signed Up for This’
One of her older songs, ‘You Signed Up for This’ is the title track of Maisie Peters’ debut album. The singer details how it feels to be young and navigate the trials of adulthood and heartbreak: feelings all of us have experienced during this transitional time. Like many of her other tracks, this song is simple and honest. Lyrics such as “Please don’t give up on me yet / I know I’ll get better / I’m just not better yet” and “5’1, do you think that I’ll grow anymore? (No)” serve as Maisie’s candid admission of wanting to grow in more ways than one (us too, girl!). Either way, this song is pop perfection!
‘Sad Girl Summer’
Written and released at the height of the pandemic, ‘Sad Girl Summer’ is Maisie Peters’ spin on the infamous hot girl summer. This song is fun and offers a message of self-acceptance without being in a relationship. She encourages us to remove toxic people from our lives with lines such as “Take my hand and lose his number / You don’t have to have another sad girl summer /Raise your glass, let it go.” After all, we’re better off without them.
Like many other artists, the video was a compilation of fan footage. It features a montage of Maisie and her fans being silly and having fun in front of the camera. It’s an anthem of female friendship and self-love. Make sure to add this song (and every other one in this list) to avoid having a ‘Sad Girl Summer!’
We could give you a thousand reasons to listen to Maisie Peters’ no-skip discography, but we hope this list is ‘Good Enough’ to make her become your new favorite artist!
