Ashton Irwin‘s second album BLOOD ON THE DRUMS dropped in full on July 17th and we have been listening to it non-stop. To make things even better, we were lucky enough to catch him perform some of it live at The Belasco to celebrate its release! And not only was this a celebration of BLOOD ON THE DRUMS but this show marks Ashton Irwin’s solo debut on the live stage and we’re so thankful we got to celebrate that with him.
Ashton Irwin is a certified rockstar — that’s our takeaway from this show. He opened with ‘Straight To Your Heart’ and it was 0 to 100 in seconds! The energy in the room was palpable and everyone was singing along, jumping, cheering, and just all around having a good time. Honestly, it made us forget that it was a Thursday night and not the start of the weekend! And while we’re used to seeing Ashton behind a drum kit we absolutely LOVED seeing him working the crowd and performing as a frontman. He engaged with the crowd, had heartfelt thank yous for everyone, and kept things hyped up and energetic. He did joke about wondering “how Luke does this,” referring to his 5SOS bandmate, and that jumping around on stage like that felt like an aerobics class.
Not to fear though, we did get to see Ashton on the drums quite a few times throughout the night.
One of the most special moments of the night for us by far was during ‘California Holds Her Breath.’ During the outro Ashton had the crowd sing along, eventually fading into just the crowd singing “California holds her breath tonight.” It was loud and passionate, people had cell phones, and someone had a lighter. We even saw a security guard joining in on the singalong! It was a really beautiful moment that highlighted the connection of the fans with each other, with Ashton, and with the music and we’re grateful we got to be a part of the experience.
We haven’t been able to stop listening to BLOOD ON THE DRUMS since the show and you should join us in streaming the album too! We also got to hear Superbloom tracks ‘Greyhound’ and ‘Have U Found What Ur Looking For,’ which closed out the show with a bang. All in all, it was an amazing night and we cannot recommend you stream BLOOD ON THE DRUMS enough.
