When you think about it, mgk and Jelly Roll are kind of like the same person, don’t you think? Both are incredibly talented, musically versatile, and have shown so much personal and artistic growth over the years! We were beyond ecstatic when we learned they teamed up for ‘Lonely Road,’ a country collab about evolving and navigating relationships when you’re fending off personal demons.
Throw in a cinematic, heartfelt music video co-starring Megan Fox and Bunnie XO, and you’ve got one of the most memorable releases of the year! ‘Lonely Road’ showcases the heart and soul of what makes mgk and Jelly Roll such special artists, turned up to the max and letting their storytelling shine. Let’s take a look at four standout lyrics that we know will be just as touching to you as they are to us.
“I’m taking back Sundays since you took away my life…”
To take someone’s life usually implies killing them, but here, mgk is reclaiming and taking back control of his life after someone took away his enjoyment of it. He used similar wording in ‘I Think I’m Okay’ – he explained to Genius that the “it’s my life and I can take it if I wanna” line is about “[taking] your destiny into your own hands, [manifesting] what you want, and [making] your life yours.”
Could this also be a sneaky Taking Back Sunday reference? We know mgk loves the 2000s rock scene, and he’s previously referenced My Chemical Romance and sampled Fall Out Boy on Tickets To My Downfall.
“Couple songs that I’d rewrite…”
Colson has grown so much over the years, so it’s natural that he doesn’t relate to certain songs or lyrics anymore. For example, he shared during a Discord Q&A with fans that it was hard for him to leave ‘Burning Memories’ on the anniversary rerelease of Hotel Diablo now that he’s repaired his relationship with his mom.
However, he did get to rewrite a little bit of ‘Glass House’ in the newer Sad Version with Naomi Wild! He changed “b*tches got these motives like Anna Nicole” to “girls in my life got motives like Anna Nicole.”
“I hear the devil wears Prada, but I couldn’t read the tags…”
Kells said on Twitter that he freestyled this line, and our minds can’t comprehend it. Yeah, we’ve known he’s a lyrical genius, but imagine freestyling something that clever? The Devil Wears Prada is a book and movie about a tyrannical, powerful woman who’s at the head of a fashion magazine, but ultimately has warmth in her heart that she buries because of the fast-paced industry she’s in. Like that woman, the woman he’s singing about seems to have a dark side, but there are also redeeming qualities that make him want to fix things.
“Lonely road, take me home to the place that we went wrong…”
‘Lonely Road’ samples John Denver’s iconic country song ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’ with a little twist. The original is about nostalgia for a place, specifically West Virginia. But with this lyrical change, mgk and Jelly Roll turn it into nostalgia for a different time in their lives, wishing they could go back and repair what broke over the years. It’s a contemplative line that shows off both artists’ ability to draw you into their story and root for them to reach a brighter place.
Which line from ‘Lonely Road’ is your favorite? If you could have mgk remix a Jelly Roll song, or Jelly Roll remix an mgk song, which song would you choose? Let us know in the comments below or hit us up on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter!
