Now that autumn has finally settled in, it’s officially midwest emo (or in this case, Denver Emo™) season– chilly weather, shorter days, and changing leaves make for the perfect setting to get in our feels. And what’s a better way to do so than soaking up all the fall vibes and crafting the perfect playlist to go with it? It’s why we’re so excited to introduce you to one of our current obsessions: A Place For Owls.
Emerging from the basement scene of Denver, A Place For Owls is one of those artists who has managed to craft the perfect blend of emotive lyrics and haunting melodies. This week, the band released their sophomore album, how we dig in the earth, and to say it’s a masterpiece is an understatement. The album weaves together themes of vulnerability and community and opens a conversation of reflecting on love, loss, and connection.
This album was our attempt to create some meaning out of the worst year and half of my life. My wife and I went through job losses, deaths in the family, disappointments and betrayals in friendship, existential confusion and sorrow.
– Vocalist Ben Sooy on how we dig in the earth
how we dig in the earth is 12 songs long. Trust us; we could sit here and talk about each one for hours, but for sanity’s sake, we won’t. Instead, here’s a list of our top 3 tracks. You’ll just have to dive into A Place for Owls’ discography yourself and let us know all your favorite moments. (Spoiler: you’ll probably relate to them all).

‘broken open seed’
“Still, there are wars we wage / Against everything we’ve made / When everything’s asleep”
‘broken open seed’ is the first of three singles from how we dig in the earth, and that spot was so rightfully earned! The track masterfully encapsulates the album’s duality in balancing vulnerability with confrontation and serves as the perfect introduction to the new era of A Place For Owls.
‘when your eyes close’
“When we were children / How we hid inside ourselves / But now we’re older / How the feeling overwhelms”
Next up, ‘when your eyes close’ is another track we know will end up on our On Repeat playlists! This song is a bit more heavy and upbeat but proves that fast-paced doesn’t have to mean losing depth. The lyrics once again dive into the album’s theme of duality and open the conversation about the universal struggle between hiding and sharing, all while walking side by side through our dreams and fears.
‘help me let the right ones in’
“Deep inside your chest / Are all the people that you’ve been / Did you find your rest / Did you let the right ones in”
This song might stretch over six and a half minutes, but trust us, you’ll be left wanting more! ‘help me let the right ones in’ delves into the nostalgia of youth and the challenge of letting the right people into your life. The track is highlighted by its powerful instrumentals and raw, vulnerable lyrics. It beautifully captures the essence of connection. As the final track on the album, it offers a perfect sense of closure and is the true testament to A Place For Owls’ talents.
