November feels like a grand month for historical fiction, don’t you think? Katharine McGee, beloved author of the American Royals series is back with another historical romance! Only this time, we’re traveling to 19th-century Europe.
A Queen’s Game by Katharine McGee follows three princesses: Alix of Hesse, Hélène d’Orléans, and May of Teck. Each young lady have their sights set on finding love and/or securing a stable marriage (ideally with the same person). Their paths become entangled with each other in more ways than they’d expected.
We absolutely love Katharine McGee’s latest novel, and we know you will, too. Here are three of our favorite things about A Queen’s Game!

Book Overview: A Queen’s Game
Content Warnings: trauma and grief, panic attacks, mention of family member deaths
Summary: In the last glittering decade of European empires, courts, and kings, three young women are on a collision course with history—and with each other.
Alix of Hesse is Queen Victoria’s favorite granddaughter, so she can expect to end up with a prince . . . except that the prince she’s falling for is not the one she’s supposed to marry.
Hélène d’Orléans, daughter of the exiled King of France, doesn’t mind being a former princess; it gives her more opportunity to break the rules like running around with the handsome, charming, and very much off-limits heir to the British throne, Prince Eddy.
Then there’s May of Teck. After spending her entire life on the fringes of the royal world, May is determined to marry a prince—and not just any prince, but the future king.
In a story that sweeps from the glittering ballrooms of Saint Petersburg to the wilds of Scotland, A Queen’s Game recounts a pivotal moment in real history as only Katharine McGee can tell it: through the eyes of the young women whose lives, and loves, changed it forever.
Sweeping Romances
If you decide to read A Queen’s Game in public, then fair warning: You may catch yourself looking goofy and grinning from all the romance. We know we did! Hélène and Eddy’s secret meetings and declarations of love had our jaws on the floor. Alix and Nicholas’ meaningful conversations and fondness for each other had us swooning. And May and George’s childhood friendship-turned-something-more took us by surprise. We ate up all the flirty glances and stolen kisses, TBH.
Expecting The Unexpected
But when it comes to royal couples in A Queen’s Game, we can’t expect it to end well for everyone. There will be people who end up in arranged marriages to other royals, despite loving another. Then there are those who sabotage other courtships for their own benefit. We don’t want to spoil too much, but just prepare yourself for drama, meddling, and plot twists. The open ending leaves a lot of room for speculation, so we can only wait for the sequel now.
The Glamor Of It All
Another one of our favorite things about A Queen’s Game is seeing all the fancy balls and glamor. Yes, we know we’re overly romanticizing the life of a royal. But that’s what historical fiction is for! We’d love to grow up learning ballroom dances and getting to show off our skills at events. And we’d love to dress up in fine clothing for no good reason or dress in slacks to go horse riding occasionally. This book is the perfect escapist read if you’re a fan of the glamor like we are.
Katharine McGee’s A Queen’s Game reimagines 19th-century European royalty, telling a sweeping tale of three princesses as they hope to find love and eventually must fight for it.
