One thing about us here at THP is that we are huge fans of indie pop, so whenever we get to know a new indie pop artist our day immediately gets better. So imagine our happiness when we first heard Beth McKenzie’s music back in July when ‘Don’t Tell My Boyfriend’ came out and made quite the storm on TikTok.
And now we get to listen to a whole EP of Beth’s insane vocals and intelligent lyrics! With five tracks total, three of which were singles, Does This Make Me A Bitter Woman? has a bit of everything and we are living for it. Shall we talk a bit about the songs now?
First of all, we’d like to say that the decision of opening and closing the EP with previously unheard tracks was a great one in our opinion. And starting off with ‘The Cult’ had us hooked from the very first note. The playfulness in the lyrics makes it easier to talk about a bad experience through humor.
‘The Cult’ is commentary on outdated societal views that I feel strongly against. If you relate to this song and what it represents, I want it to be a sign for you to consider walking away.

Back on the topic of ‘Don’t Tell My Boyfriend,’ we totally get why it got so popular on social media because the song is really catchy! The lyrics speak about dealing with a partner’s internalized homophobia and how that affect the relationship. Then, we have ‘Inside Out,’ which was released last month and it quickly became one of our go-to songs for when we need to scream about situations that left us feeling betrayed by people we know ‘Inside Out.’
‘She’s Finally Lost It!’ is one of our personal faves on Does This Make Me A Bitter Woman? because of how openly and truthfully Beth McKenzie sings about the abuse of power in the industry wrapped up in an upbeat indie pop sound. The contrast between the music and the lyrics create a unique feeling that will have you singing along before you’re finished listening to it for the first time.
The lyrics came easily but, at first, musically the song was very dark and somber, and it just didn’t work. My producer and I decided on a radical change and created an upbeat, edgy sound that captures the sheer insanity of the whole situation.

Finally, we have ‘It Won’t Always Feel So Heavy’ closing Beth’s debut EP in the best way possible. The lyrics talk about how even the worst times can be easier when we have someone to hold our hand and remind us it won’t always be this hard. And one of the most interesting things about this song is the fact that the title came from a talk Beth McKenzie had with her producer while getting coffee.
