We’ve had our hands on Alessia Cara’s new album, Love & Hyperbole, for a little over a month now. But it still hits like it’s the first time we’re listening each time we revisit it. Not only have we been eagerly awaiting a new album from Alessia for years now, but the entire concept of this album has us obsessed. We even got to listen to Alessia talk about her new album, the process, visuals, and so much more!

Visuals
Did we mention that our queen has synesthesia? That’s right, and it’s exactly why the visuals in the album look the way they do. According to Alessia, the reds in the album are tied to love. But wine red is specifically a very sophisticated and rich color to her. The contrast of the deep red and black on the album cover is her testament to not only what the album means, but contrast as a whole and how we need it in life.
The Music
As we said before, this is a masterpiece of an album. Dare we say, it might be a total no-skip album for us. ‘Fire’ is a standout track for us personally, but it also is for Alessia. She said it was the first love song she’d ever written that didn’t have a layer of negativity or fear to it. “It’s a lot scarier for me to talk about being in love in a lighter sense.”
‘Obvious’ was a song she said just “flowed out of her.” And we can pick up on that with how effortlessly it plays into our ears. The use of hyperbole in this album as a tool to make it through the heavier emotions is a concept we can’t get enough of. This is truly where her Cancer sun comes out to shine in our opinions.
People come to my music for relatibility and to know that someone else is going through the same things as them (…) it’s a balance between selfishly writing for yourself (…) and understanding other people want to relate as well.
Looking back at her career, Alessia says she’s still the same person she was during her previous releases in many ways. “I feel like the exact same person. That version of me could look at me and recognize exactly who this is. But I’ve also changed so much too.” She went on to say that in her previous music, she had this fire in her that was fueled by fear and angst. Now, when she looks back at that time, she feels a lot softer.
This album was a new level of vulnerability from Alessia, and we’re so grateful for it. Not to mention she wrote a total of 47 songs for this album and we only got 14…how do we get a 47 album deluxe?
