We’re walking through the woods, wearing our favorite flannel, with a mysterious folk melody strumming on a guitar behind us, and Lord Huron has announced their next album, The Cosmic Selector Vol. 1. We reach up to touch the leaves, stars twinkling above us, and we listen to the new Lord Huron song ‘Looking Back.’
At least, that’s how it feels when we listen to the familiar voice of Lord Huron. And as if we were surprised, they’ve hit the mark once again. Not only do we feel like we’re safely tucked away in a remote cabin in the woods, but the lyrics leave us wishing we could sit and analyze all day. Once again, Lord Huron has perfected the art of transforming longing into words. We know that’s what makes Lord Huron, along with our other folk heroes like Hozier or Noah Kahan, so addicting. So if you simply can’t get enough of ‘Looking Back,’ we want to introduce you to a few of our other favorites by Lord Huron.
‘Meet Me In The Woods’
Our old friend, setlist.fm, tells us this song has a consistent place on Lord Huron’s setlist. And selfishly, we need it to stay for their upcoming summer tour. ‘Meet Me In The Woods’ is love and adventure turned into a song. If you’re looking for longing, look no further. We can feel the longing for the unknown, for something more out of life. The narrator grapples with the need for belonging and the consequences of taking risks. We can’t lie; we’re transported into the life of the storyteller every time we listen to this song.
‘The Moon Doesn’t Mind’
Hard to believe this song is one minute long when we could listen to it for hours. With such an outstanding opening track, you’ll have no choice but to listen to the rest of Long Lost (2022). The opening strums of the guitar pull us into something out of the ’60s. The slight echo, the acoustics, and the soulful tone are almost haunting. Add in the applause at the end, and it might as well be unearthed footage from some long-forgotten folk festival.
‘Love Like Ghosts’
If you love ‘Meet Me In The Woods,’ you’ll love this one just as much. Using the same melody, they flawlessly weave together three separate songs to build a narrative. These two songs, as well as Lord Huron’s most popular song, ‘The Night We Met,’ introduce three different takes on the same melody. The result is a through line about love and loss. ‘Love Like Ghosts’ opens Strange Trails with a devastating desperation of a love just lost. Our narrator journeys into the unknown of life after loss and comes out the other side, still grieving, but perhaps ready for the next adventure.
‘She Lit A Fire’
Although ‘She Lit A Fire’ is completely unrelated to the previously mentioned arc, the care with which he sings makes it easy to imagine that this song is about the same person. There’s a touch of darkness as he searches for the elusive subject. The same desire that rips through our narrator in this song could easily turn into a powerful ache that leads to the grief of our Strange Trails storyline.
‘Ends Of The Earth’
Following the theme of adventure, ‘Ends of the Earth’ explores a love for nature and shares it unconditionally and passionately with a loved one. If you love the “feeling like you’re in the mountains” vibe of folk music, this is the song for you. “What good is living a life you’ve been given if all you do is stand in one place?” are words to live by. Hopefully, this song inspires you to try something you’ve always wanted to. And these five (six, don’t forget ‘Look Behind’) songs can be your soundtrack as you do so.
If you want nothing more than to close your eyes and feel these songs, we encourage you to consider doing so at a packed concert venue. Lord Huron is (hopefully) coming to a city near you this summer, and we can’t imagine a better way to spend a summer night. Find tickets here, and we’ll see you on July 18 for The Cosmic Selector Vol. 1! Until then, feel free to discuss Lord Huron, as well as all things pop culture, on our socials.
