mgk’s lost americana chapter is just getting started, but the mini-era we’ve been living out for ‘cliché’ has been such a great time for EST everywhere! We’ve gotten to celebrate so many cool moments with Kells and the EST family, from his first cover placement on Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist to a TODAY Show takeover where he even got to read the weather. As we gear up to move into the ‘vampire diaries’ era, let’s reflect on some of our favorite memories we’ve made with ‘cliché!’
And make sure you pre-save lost americana if you haven’t already so we can make sure mgk earns his third #1 Billboard Hot 100 album in a row, following Tickets To My Downfall and mainstream sellout.
‘cliché (sad version)’
The ‘cliché’ era has been a pretty happy time, so we’re gonna let our tears out first so we can all celebrate later. “Sad versions” have become a bit of a tradition in EST, between the melancholy acoustic version of ‘Bloody Valentine’ and the sad versions of ‘Glass House’ and ‘I Think I’m OKAY’ that mgk put on the fifth anniversary edition of Hotel Diablo. The latest addition to this little sad family is a piano-based take on ‘cliché,’ focusing on the sadder elements to the song that don’t always shine through on the upbeat version.
Behind the bouncy guitar and catchy melodies of ‘cliché’ are a lot of lyrics that make you go “wait a sec, huh?” as you listen, but the stone keeps rolling and you don’t really get to sit with them because you have to keep singing along. ‘cliché (sad version)’ gives those lines more breathing room and it’s pretty much emotional punch after emotional punch: “Tell me, would you wait for me?” “You should run away with me, even if you’re better off alone.” “If you take this chance, I’ll give you oxygen to breathe me in, but I’ll say sorry in advance.” “My head’s a mess, it’s like that every day.” “I feel my knees get weak beneath me, I know this night might be our last.”
The S In EST Stands For “Slime”
mgk’s connection with his oldest daughter, Casie, is so heart-warming! They’ve hit up the Kids’ Choice Awards several times since she was little, and they kicked things up a notch this year by having Casie introduce Colson’s performance. “I know no one really wants their parents at the party, but you? You’re pretty cool,” she joked as he flashed a big smile.
Once he made it to the stage, he bust out those iconic dance moves from the ‘cliché’ music video! And there’s only one option for the perfect grand finale when you’re playing the Kids’ Choice Awards: getting slimed, of course. Maybe we should consider adding neon green to the lost americana color palette?
Welcome To The Family, Saga!
Finally, we couldn’t make this list without spotlighting one of the most important moments of the past few weeks. mgk welcomed his second daughter earlier this year and he revealed her name with an adorable video of them jamming out to a ukulele! Saga Blade Fox-Baker has the coolest parents of pretty much anyone on the planet, and even just the idea of him possibly having a song dedicated to her on lost americana is making us emotional. We still need to break out the tissues every time we listen to ‘play this when i’m gone,’ which he dedicated to Casie!
It’s safe to say we’ll always cherish the ‘cliché’ era! What was your favorite part? Let us know in the comments below or hit us up on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter! You can also buzz on over to our Reddit community to chat with us.
