We hope that some of our readers will recognize this next title, either from the WEBTOON comic or the coming-of-age film in 2024. (Or, dare we say, the novel from Wattpad.) Float is a new graphic novel by Kate Merchant and illustrated by CJ Joaquin. The first volume of this slice-of-life romance is set for release on July 15th, and we couldn’t be more excited for the print version of Float!
Float, Vol. 1 tells the story of Waverly Lyons, a girl from Alaska staying with her aunt in Florida for the summer. She just has one embarrassing secret: she can’t swim. Then there’s Blake Hamilton, the brooding yet handsome boy next door who soon finds out Waverly’s secret and teaches her how to swim.
We’ve been a fan of this WEBTOON for years, so it’s an honor to be able to review the graphic novel ahead of its release. Here’s how we know you’ll enjoy Float, Vol. 1 by Kate Merchant and CJ Joaquin. Keep reading for an exclusive sneak peek at a few pages!

Book Overview: Float, Vol. 1
Summary: Amidst the chaos of her parents’ bitter divorce, Alaskan teenager Waverly Lyons trades in her textbooks and parka for a summer of suntans and short-shorts with her aunt in Florida. A fish out of water even back in the snow, Waverly is determined to be everything she isn’t back home: cool, fun, dare she even say part of a group? There’s just one problem. She doesn’t know how to swim.
Enter Blake — the super-tan, super-hot, super-arrogant boy next door who seems to hate her guts. When he discovers her secret, Waverly is positive that her perfect summer is perfectly over. But then Blake does the unthinkable. He offers to teach her.
You Enjoy Comics In All Formats
It’s been forever since we’ve covered a physical graphic novel, and we’re so glad Float, Vol. 1 has brought us back into it! If you’re a fan of comic books, web comics, manga, or manhwa, then you’re in the right spot. Float, Vol. 1 introduces a new slice-of-life comic set in a charming beach town in Florida. The panels are so vibrant and enjoyable to read. Each chapter had us hooked, and we’re huge fans of the color scheme!
You Need A New Summer Read
We finished Float, Vol. 1 in one sitting, and we immediately went on WEBTOON to start rereading it. Waverly experiences a huge culture shock with the wild teen parties and beach activities. She only plans to spend a few months with her aunt, and she’s going to make the most of it by learning how to swim and making memories with her new friends. This graphic novel is perfect if you need a short and sweet summer read.
