At THP, we take pride in telling you about the latest music that you should be listening to. And if you haven’t heard it already, you need to listen to ‘kiss’ by garbagebarbie immediately. We’re so excited because we got the chance to talk with the LA DIY band all about it! In this sweet exclusive interview, we talk all about their new single, what LA DIY means to them, and more. Let’s jump right in!
You’re pretty well known in the LA DIY scene! How has the scene shaped you as a band?
Our scene in LA is everything to us, without the people in our community we wouldn’t be a band. Even before we had music out, we had friends and friends of friends that came out to our first show and from there, are community continued to grow. garbagebarbie shows always have been and will continue to be a space where everyone is welcome.
Who are some of your other favorite LA DIY bands?
Right now, we are listening to AKA BK, The Sophs, Wet World and projectile. These bands and artists are all a part of our community and we all support each other. Instead of competition, the LA DIY scene is full of artists building each other up and we are lucky enough to be a part of that.

You put on a lot of community-centered DIY events. Can you eleaborate more on those and what they mean to you?
When we first started as a band, our goal was to create shows that we would want to go to as audience members. We began to rent out art galleries, warehouse spaces and things like that to put on shows because that way, all the creative freedom and control would be ours. This helped us with our world building and identity as a band. Even though the shows were expensive for us to throw, we made them free for our community so everyone was able to come.
You also put on themed shows, which is so fun. What’s been your favorite theme so far?
We’ve been running with this “live on tv” theme for a while now where we have a talk show host interview us and narrate the entire gig. It’s fun for us to explore themes like this for shows because it makes the whole thing seem more like a theatrical performance, rather than just a concert.

Let’s talk about your new single, ‘kiss.’ What was it like and recording a pop song, compared to your previous music?
Even though, kiss is definitely the most different song than anything else in our entire discography, writing it came super natural to us. We were lucky enough to work on it with LA-based producer/artist Brandon Shoop, and the whole process gave us a way to poke fun at the LA dating scene and influencer culture. It kinda started off as a joke but we ended up loving the song.
You also said that with ‘kiss,’ you were, “poking fun at the superficial world that is Los Angeles.” Do you think that there’s a side to LA that often gets overlooked?
There’s a huge side to LA that gets overlooked. Often times, people from outside LA think of this city as a big pool of people trying to be better than one another. While that might be true in some instances, the community here is really close and we as artists tend to look out for one another. Like we said, our community always comes first.

We went through your Instagram and we absolutely love your aesthetic! What inspired your aesthetic and why do you feel that represents you best, as a band?
Our aesthetic as a band is based on looking back at nostalgia from an ultra-modern world. We tend to portray grime and the darker sides of LA, but we also like to capture different time periods in music.
If garbagebarbie got to design a Barbie doll, what would its aesthetic and career be?
Funny enough, one of our friends already designed a couple for us and they fit our aesthetic perfectly. They are decked out head to toe in all black trash bags and crazy hair. We’ve even had people come to shows dressed like them.

We believe in the power of manifestation. If you could speak one thing into existence for garbagebarbie, what would it be?
We want to continue to grow and build our community for as long as we possibly can, in the meantime, our plan is to make great music and work to create something bigger than ourselves.
We’d like to thank garbagebarbie for taking the time to chat with us! What do you think of garbagebarbie’s new song, ‘kiss’ and do you love it as much as we do? Let us know in the comments, on Facebook, Instagram, or by tweeting us @thehoneypop!
