Fans of The Technicolors rejoice! Their new album Heavy Pulp dropped last week and we got to attend their album release show at Zebulon in Los Angeles. Lucky for you, we’re here to tell you all about it 🙂
Imagine you walk into what you think is a regular old bar. It doesn’t seem very big, it’s decently full for a Friday night, the lights are low. Average weekend experience right? Now, imagine you make your way to the back and enter through a small hallway (it’s so short we don’t even know if it counts as a hallway tbh) and open the door. There, you find a room full of people, ready to listen to some rock and roll. That’s what greeted us as we arrived to Zebulon Cafe in Los Angeles, ready to hear what The Technicolors had in store for us. The intimate venue space was already decently full and it only became more packed as the night went on. Jo Alice wowed the crowd with her hauntingly beautiful voice and before we knew it, it was time for The Technicolors.
Their setlist was a mix of old favorites and new soon-to-be favorites that we got to hear live for the first time. Of course, Heavy Pulp tracks were on heavy rotation throughout the night. Songs like Serotonin and Gold Fang, which they opened with, made their live debut. The energy was up to 100 and beyond the second the band hit the stage and we couldn’t help but get caught up in the vibe.
Our best work yet? Maybe the first time we stumbled into what felt like our own little world here and this record is our first exploration. Definitely the first time we leaned into the fact that we all love and are inspired by so much music in so many different directions. We weren’t afraid to let that show more vibrantly versus maybe tucking that part of us back in an attempt to make things feel ‘cohesive.’ We found a lot of identity in making this one and I hear a lot of space in it.
Brennan Smiley
The Technicolors frontman Brennan Smiley said that this record is “Our best work yet?” and we’re inclined to agree. It’s a venture into different influences, experiences, and ideas all coming together to create something vibrant, real, and all around fun. They left the pulp in the juice, so to speak, and created something authentic with Heavy Pulp. Some of our favorites from the album are ‘First Class to Nowhere,’ ‘Softcore,’ and album closer ‘I Miss My Friends.’
Be sure to stream Heavy Pulp and let us know what your favorite tracks are! Did you get a chance to see The Technicolors at any of these album release shows?
