New year, new Only The Poets. With the release of their debut album, And I’d Do It Again, we have fourteen new tracks to fall in love with. At the same time, it’s the same Only The Poets we’ve come to know and trust over the years. If you’ve been with The Honey Pop for a while, you’ve definitely heard this name before. And you know how much we love our alt/indie boys.
Just like our old favorites from Only The Poets, And I’d Do It Again brings the best of what they have to offer: strong vocals, jaunty melodies, and infectious energy. And of course, being their debut album, they take all of it to the next level. Whether you’re already a dedicated fan of Only The Poets, or you’re taking advantage of the new year to find your next favorite, allow us to prepare you for this masterful debut album.
If you’re a longtime fan of Only The Poets, we’d like to get you excited for And I’d Do It Again by pointing you towards some of our old favorites. These are the songs that remind us most of the sound of the new album. This goes for you too, new fans. If you like what you’re hearing, get ready for more on January 30!
‘Miserable’
Sonically, this album is high-energy. Although it is not without its moments of quiet reflection, even the vulnerable moments are typically set to a lively beat. ‘Miserable’ is a perfect example of what Only The Poets do best. They unselfconsciously talk about love and loss, confessing to the kind of fears that one might find themselves thinking about in the middle of the night. But somehow, it doesn’t feel hopeless, or even sad. In fact, it feels like freedom and clarity. Like they’re not thinking about this alone in the shelter of a dark bedroom, but speeding through the city, windows down, on the very night depicted on the cover of And I’d Do It Again. This is the exact feeling of the album. They don’t shy away from the ups and downs of life, but they do it in a way that feels cinematic and hopeful.
‘Change’
This song would fit right in with And I’d Do It Again. With its powerful, catchy chorus, it’ll be stuck in your mind for days. And if you love this sound, we promise you’ll love the album. It’s also another song that feels like reflecting late at night. Starting with the line, “I’ll spend another night lonely,” does set a certain tone. But we quickly realize that this song is not about wallowing; it’s about changing for the better. As Only The Poets do best, they manage to write about real emotions, but make it seem like everything will work out in the end.
‘JUMP!’
These really are some of the catchiest songs in Only The Poets’ discography. You’ll be singing this one for weeks. Besides the sound, this song seems to encapsulate the theme of Only The Poets’ music. Even as their debut album talks about loss, mental health, and resilience, it also feels like a celebration of life. To fully embrace life and everything that comes with it, we have to jump in. We may have to deal with the inevitable consequences, but what other way is there to live?
And I’d Do It Again
Now that we’ve given you our top three picks to get you excited, allow us to hint at some of our favorite songs off the And I’d Do It Again album. If you love the songs we’ve already given you, we promise you will love this new album as much as we do. (Especially these three!) Or maybe you’ll find your own favorites. Either way, this album is for you.
‘Monumental’
While the first track is more of an intro, ‘Monumental’ is the first song to really dive into the album (or should we say jump in?). And they couldn’t have picked a better song to get up ready for the ride we’re about to go on. Right away, it feels like we’re clicking play on a coming-of-age soundtrack. Like we hinted earlier, the album cover with its neon lights against a dark night sky perfectly matches the album. You’ll hear it as soon as you press play on this song. Just with the opener, we know this album is going to be full of life, both the weightless and the suffocating sides of it. Only The Poets aren’t shying away from anything. They’re ready to live and learn. And if they had to, they would do it all again.
‘Freeze’
Although we already picked our top three songs to get ready for this album, we need to add that if you love ‘One More Night,’ you’ll also love this one. It’s just as energetic and cinematic. And it will make you appreciate life the same way. We’ll leave it at that, and we’ll let you discover it for yourself.
‘Bad’
From the first note of this one, it has an edgier feel. Although this is technically their debut, ‘Bad’ shows how much they’ve already grown as a band. Since their first EP, their sound has evolved, and they seem more confident in what works for them. Throughout this album, they take more risks. They know what works, but they’re not afraid to play around. We can hear more of a 90s influence in some songs. Songs like this shamelessly experiment with sound, and it undoubtedly pays off.
There you have it! Now you have everything you need to prepare for your new favorite album. And I’d Do It Again is out January 30, and you can pre-order here.
