How NMIXX Became The First K-Pop Group To Participate In Carnaval
If we were to mention Senhor do Bonfim ribbons, adding paçoca to your açaí, and going to see a trio elétrico during Carnaval, you’d think we’re just mentioning staples of Brazilian culture, but we’re actually talking about what NMIXX has been up to this past week. The girls group made history in the past few days by becoming the first K-Pop group to ever participate in Brazilian Carnaval, one of the world’s biggest cultural celebrations.
Invited by Pabllo Vittar, who they’ve collabed with for the track ‘Mexe,’ the girls went to São Paulo, performed on top of a trio elétrico (a moving truck with a mini stage on top) during Bloco da Pabllo, and enjoyed Carnaval and the best Brazil has to offer both on and off the stage. This moment brought to light internationally something Brazilians have known about for a very long time: the potential K-Pop has not only in Brazil, but all of Latin America, is huge. Even after their mini concert was over, the girls went down and had the best time just dancing on the street surrounded by over two million people who went to Bloco da Pabllo.
And even beyond the performance itself, the NMIXX members have been experiencing Brazilian culture in many aspects, with Sullyoon sharing photos wearing a Senhor do Bonfim ribbon on her wrist (tradition says you’re supposed to tie it and make a wish, then let it naturally fall off; when it does, it means your wish came true,) Bae posing with a packet of Paçoquinha (a Brazilian sweet made out of peanuts), and both Bae and Lily enjoying Bad Bunny’s concert in São Paulo on February 21. Safe to say the girls not only enjoyed Carnaval but also had one of the best group anniversaries of their career so far.
And if you thought they were done, think again! During their stay, both the NMIXX members and Pabllo posted TikToks doing a challenge to promote their new song together: ‘TIC TIC.’ We’re so hyped for this new collab, we’ll be talking about it for ages, just wait. Blending lyrics in Korean, Portuguese, and English, and with a beat that’s very clearly inspired by Brazilian Funk, ‘TIC TIC’ is already carving out its place in both our Latin music and K-Pop playlists.
And not only have they recorded the song with Pabllo Vittar, NMIXX were also seen filming the MV for the track in various locations in São Paulo, including a helipad and the República neighborhood. It’s Brazilian culture and K-Pop mixed in the best way possible, in our opinion.
NMIXX’s latest trip to Brazil shows what we think may be a shift in the K-Pop industry, making companies and artists alike pay more attention to the Brazilian and Latin American markets. And we’re looking forward to more cross-globe interactions!
