What comes to mind when we talk about old-school R&B? For us, it’s the fashion, the vocal talent, and the iconic 2000s album covers. Kehlani is bringing us there on her new album KEHLANI. One thing our girl Kehlani is going to do is make an amazing album, per the Recording Academy. She truly never (and we mean never) misses! Her latest album, self-titled KEHLANI, is no different. In fact, this new record is full of amazing songs and features that we need you all to get a listen to, if you haven’t already. Here are our favorite songs from the new record, and the classic R&B moments that stood out to us the most.

‘Shoulda Never’ Featuring Usher
Her name is spelled “K-E-H-L-A-N-I” and don’t you ever forget it. Soon, that name will be atop billboards and arenas across the globe. Right off the bat, ‘Shoulda Never’ feat. Usher brought us to the dance floor. Kehlani certainly knows how to groove, as she proved on Crash, but these new songs just bring something fresh and new to the table. Kehlani is really showing off just how bright a talent she is on ‘Shoulda Never,’ making the whole world recite her name. Not to mention, she got legendary Usher to hop on the track, which makes it 10x better. If you need a good introduction to Kehlani’s music, we suggest you start with ‘Shoulda Never.’
‘Still’
Most surprisingly, ‘Still’ made it out on top for us honeybees. This track really stood out from the others because it brought us back to the early 2000s, but with that 2020s flair. When we hear ‘Still’ we hear Kehlani singing from the heart, which is where all of her best songs come from. It sounds like we’re right in the studio with her, and as long-time fans, we value that production aspect. Writing about crying in hotels is a classic trope found in some of our favorite R&B songs, and ‘Still’ is Kehlani’s contribution. These past few days, we’ve found ourselves hitting replay on ‘Still’ over and over again. It might just be our #1! We need to hear it live, expeditiously.
‘Lights On’ Featuring Big Sean
Ain’t nothing more classic R&B than this song right here. ‘Lights On’ feat. Big Sean was a song that this album needed, and wouldn’t be complete without. We can see the music video now – groovy choreography, Kehlani and Big Sean dancing together back to back on a spinning elevated surface, green and blue lights, and all the elements of our favorite old-school R&B music videos. This might just be our favorite feature on the album, but more importantly, we need to know what yours was.
