Blythe Woods just announced her debut album Loser’s Guide To Life, alongside releasing two singles, ‘Rowan Wait Up’ and title track ‘Losers Guide To Life.’ We got the chance to interview Blythe about the process behind writing this album, what’s coming next for her, and more!
Hi Blythe, we are so excited to have you! Before we get started, we would love for you to introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi, I’m Blythe Woods! I’m a 14 year old musician who is inspired by indie rock and pop, and loves making music to an undefined genre. I am incredibly grateful to be part of this interview! I just dropped two singles: ‘Rowan Wait Up’ and ‘Loser’s Guide to Life.’ I’m hyped to share more!
You’ve stated that you “think you may be possessed” by music, allowing it to take over your body and mind. With you, it is obvious that this connection goes much deeper. Could you elaborate on that?
Yes, I feel like my music comes out of nowhere. When I pick up my guitar I feel a flood of emotions that I can’t describe. I just start singing as if the song has already been written, and I’m just an observer of my feelings.
The sad lyrics mixed with the upbeat music give ‘Loser’s Guide to Life’ an “it’s okay not to be okay” feeling. Can you tell us what you want listeners to take away from this track?
I honestly can’t tell you what I want you to take away from this track. I just hope you can pull what you need. I like the juxtaposition between sad and what our ears think is happy. It makes it feel real and, as you stated, “it’s okay not to be okay.”
Your artistic vibe has a truly whimsical and authentic feel. What artists do you take inspiration from?
I take inspiration from Queen, Lorde, Chappell Roan, and Fiona Apple. I just really like artists who are truly and undeniably themselves. Me, along with any teenage girl my age, obsessively watch music videos in my room at night and am always so blown away by all the pop princesses.
Growing up in a multitude of very different places- New York, Los Angeles, and Montana- must have kept you in an ever-changing environment. How does your music reflect that?
I think growing up around different people and places, and always moving around always kept me inspired. Especially being surrounded by cool people, like my family and everyone who works with us, they continue to teach me new things everyday.
Your music video for ‘Loser’s Guide to Life’ is a creative and beautiful multi-media animation that you should be incredibly proud of. Could you give us a look into what the process for that video was like?
Yes, it was so fun! I got to work with an amazing team and got to be directed by one of my favorite people ever, Maddie Rubin-Charlesworth. I’m so grateful I got to work with a super cool animator, Enne Goldstein. None of it was made from AI. Maddie, me, and my whole creative team are really anti AI when it comes to making art. So it was really important for us to work with real artists. All of it was handmade with love. Seeing that process was really cool. I honestly had a blast, my favorite part was being completely covered in paint because that’s a really natural state for me. Everyday you will find me in some way covered in paint.
Your music video for ‘Rowan Wait Up’ just released! Give us a rundown of how the creative process for this track differed from ‘Loser’s Guide to Life.’
Good question! The difference between working on “Rowan Wait Up” from “Loser’s Guide to Life” is that I originally wrote “Rowan Wait Up” in Montana, in my bedroom. Something really crazy happened, and I remember sitting down and not even realizing I was writing about the topic, but I was. Normally, songs come really fast to me, but this one took a couple days to write. I wrote “Loser’s Guide to Life” in the grass in my backyard in New York and it came to me super fast. I’m really glad both videos capture and express how I really feel.
We have to take a minute to say congratulations on the announcement of your debut album! What are you most excited for with an entire album coming out for the world to hear?
Honestly this might sound selfish, but I’m so excited to listen to it easily on my streaming platforms, because right now I have a link and it feels like keeping a secret that I don’t want to keep. It feels like I have really good gossip that I’ve been wanting to share. I can’t wait to see how everyone reacts. I really poured my heart into it, and had the best producer who really never asked me to hold back on my quirkiness.
Are we going to get the chance to hear any of the new tracks from Loser’s Guide to Life live anytime soon?
Absolutely! I’ll keep them coming, along with some other little surprises… heheh

I really love Dolly Parton, and I spent a lot of the summer in Nashville attending a summer writing camp with other kids around my age, and everyday we got to walk in under Dolly and Taylor and other icons in music. Everyday, I bought a new piece of Dolly memorabilia. She’s on my wall in my room, and one of her many amazing quotes I love is to “Find out who you are, and do it on purpose”. I think that’s really important for young girls to hear today. She actually was an inspiration for one of my favorite songs on the record.
