Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, and bringing a witchy folk sound that puts a spell on anyone who listens, the duo Charm of Finches is our latest musical obsession. Mabel and Ivy Windred-Wornes have been making music since 2018 when they released their first single ‘The Bridge.’ Since then, the sisters have come up with three albums from 2019 to 2021, and now they’re back for the fourth one, titled Marlinchen In The Snow.
Marlinchen In The Snow is made up of 11 tracks which all have different vibes and a cohesive sound at the same time. Truly a work of art if you ask us. Mabel and Ivy once again prove they’re capable of transporting us to a whole new world with their voices. And their lyrics certainly help a lot with that, as well. It’s amazing to see how The Juniper Tree, a Grimm fairytale, has influenced the work, including the name of the album since one of the characters is a girl named Marlinchen.
“It’s a haunting tale of how Marlinchen discovers the death of her stepbrother at the hands of her mother. This found its way into one of our songs. There’s lots of symbolism in the story but really, it’s about female strength and intuition – overcoming obstacles led by your inner voice – a theme throughout the album.”
Mabel Windred-Wornes on the influence of the fairytale The Juniper Tree on the album
We have found some of our new favorite songs in Marlinchen In The Snow. Such as the opening song of the album, ‘Clean Cut’ and the fifth track, ‘If You Know Me.’ ‘Clean Cut’ starts us off strong by talking about leaving something (and someone) behind because, as hard as it is, it’s still necessary to make that clean cut. ‘If You Know Me,’ on the other hand, is more about how to work things out so no one leaves.
Another favorite of ours is ‘On My Own.’ It’s just really comforting to have a song that perfectly embodies the feeling of understanding we have to face some challenges alone. It feels like a warm hug from someone who truly understands it. And, of course, ‘Human’ is also a highlight from Marlinchen In The Snow. We have yet to see lyrics that hit harder than “it’s not my job to teach you how to be a human man.”
