Storytelling At Its Finest
‘YOU AGAINST YOURSELF’ tells a story from beginning to end, going from an uplifting first verse to a head-banging chorus and ending with an incredibly honest bridge. This storytelling makes this a sincere pop anthem, and we can’t get enough of it! Some details throughout the track will give you goosebumps. For example, the instrumental during the chorus gets louder as it goes to get to the climax of the song, but when Ruel sings the last line, “Oh, why’s it always you against yourself?,” the instrumental stops to let his vocals (and the song title) shine. So good!
Bringing The Lyrics To Life
The ‘YOU AGAINST YOURSELF’ music video is absolute perfection. It matches the song so well! The video tells the visual component of the track with lots of different sets and props that match the lyrics. It begins with an intervention that Ruel has thrown to express these feelings through the visuals from the video, showing scenes from Ruel with a foam finger “rooting for us,” to him being “stuck in the thick of it.”
The video also has stunning details that have caught our eye! For example, the instrumental chaos from the song is brought to life, as all of the different sets match the beat and the lyric “Selfish ways are suffocatin’, I can’t save you now” by passing as quickly as possible. So amazingly shot!
What’s Next For Ruel?
Ruel has been working on his debut album, and ‘YOU AGAINST YOURSELF’ is its first single. We cannot wait to enjoy his full record!
