The last two years have been huge for Daniel Caesar: from his features on ‘Peaches’ by Justin Bieber and Omar Apollo’s ‘Invincible’ to his unforgettable headline performance at Coachella, Daniel Caesar has had some spectacular moments and releases. In true Daniel Caesar fashion, he looks set to keep this streak up in 2023 with the release of his newest single, ‘Do You Like Me?’
The track was produced by Daniel in collaboration with Daniel Wiggins and multi-platinum artist Raphael Saadiq, known for producing songs for other artists such as Solange and Whitney Houston, as well as writing tracks like Beyonce’s ‘Cuff It.’ ‘Do You Like Me?’ uses a slower beat and dreamy harmonies to capture the chilled-out and relaxed vibe we have come to know from Daniel Caesar. Daniel’s unique vocals perfectly complement the overall mood of the song, dazzling listeners with his impressive falsetto in the choruses.
This atmosphere greatly contrasts with the lyrics, discussing the insecurities and anxieties that people can sometimes experience in relationships. Daniel describes ‘Do You Like Me?’ as “A song about a woman I respect deeply.. 90 degrees of a love triangle.” Daniel sings about how he is confident that he likes the person he is singing about but is unsure whether they reciprocate his feelings. However, he remains hopeful, ending on the lyrics:
“I guess we’ll find out // I guess we’ll wait and see // Know I like you, babe // I hope you like me”
‘Do You Like Me?’ follows on from Daniel’s previous release, ‘Please Do Not Lean’ with BADBADNOTGOOD, a critically-acclaimed stripped-back R&B track with similar dreamy vibes and harmonies. Much like his new release, ‘Please Do Not Lean’ features very intimate lyrics and themes, discussing how he was not able to commit to another person without first loving himself. Based on these two singles, we think that Daniel’s upcoming album will be packed with personal lyrics and intimate storytelling. We can already tell we’re going to be absolutely obsessed!
