Our Love For Omar Apollo Will Always Be ‘Evergreen’

With the release of his debut album and his recent GRAMMY Award nomination, 2022 seems to be the year of Omar Apollo. After blessing us with the masterpiece that is Ivory, Omar has finally released a music video for one of the album’s most popular tracks, ‘Evergreen (You Didn’t Deserve Me).’

The music video is fairly minimalistic, featuring Omar singing in a minimal setting with very muted neutral colors. This minimalist backdrop perfectly complements the melancholic nature of the song, making it feel even more intimate and personal. Throughout the video, we see the room that Omar is in crumble and explode around him. This could be interpreted as a symbol of the relationship he is singing about, again reaffirming the melancholic vibe of the song. Directed by Rubberband, the video overall really enhances the experience of listening to the song. We seriously can’t recommend it enough!

The song itself discusses a break-up, drawing particularly on feelings such as regret, yearning, and heartbreak. His soulful and emotion-packed style of singing works extremely well in a song like this, it honestly made us feel like we were going through a breakup. Omar is particularly well-known for his excellent lyricism, and this song is no exception. ‘Evergreen (You Didn’t Deserve Me At All)’ features beautiful introspective lyrics like:

“She don’t know you like me // She could never love you more // More than me // But sometimes I pray that you fall in love”
