We Can’t Get Our Heads Around Billie Marten!

Billie Marten is a masterful singer-songwriter we cannot get enough of here at The Honey POP! Whether you fell in love with her voice, lyricism, artistic vision, or just her entire everything like us, we’ve got the inside scoop on her new record, Drop Cherries, just for you! Billie said it best when she said Drop Cherries is for “…anyone who didn’t think love existed, born with 10% cynicism, or nihilism, and learning to enjoy living and liking every day.”

Drop Cherries is an album that is all about welcoming love and the possibilities it carries into your life with open arms. This is an evolution we absolutely love to see after Billie’s last record Flora Fauna. Now don’t misunderstand; that album is raw, emotionally encompassing, and absolutely flawless. But Flora Fauna served a bigger purpose for Billie; it was her resetting her narrative as a human and an artist. And without that, we wouldn’t be getting the beauty that is Drop Cherries.

You can tell how much time Billie spent crafting this record. Completely recorded on tape, Billie stated that every single sound is “directly important to me.” The mixture of this with the emotional vulnerability within the record, we hope you’re ready to go to another realm with Billie during this one. ‘I Can’t Get My Head Around You’ proves all this and more with its floating vocals that pull you into her narrative as if it’s your own.

We can’t talk about Billie without talking about her songwriting. She truly paints a story within her words and universes within her records. One of our favorite metaphors Billie always uses is dirt or soil. When asked about this, she said, “…everything was falling on me. I was covered in this thing I couldn’t get rid of, and now I feel very much clean.” This was Billie’s way of showcasing the things she was so desperately trying to leave behind or wash away. Not to mention it’s a nod to The Smiths on top of how she weaves her words masterfully.

If we could leave you with anything Billie said that should implore you to drop everything and listen to Drop Cherries literally right now. It would be this, “You know what is good and you must follow that instinct.” Let that move and push you how it will.
