A few days ago, at New York City’s Blue Note jazz club, audience members were treated to an extra special treat: an appearance by Ed Sheeran during Frederic Yonnet’s harmonica performance.
Frederic Yonnet is regarded as one of the most innovative and talented harmonica players out there. Originally from France, he has done an NPR tiny desk concert featuring comedian Dave Chappelle, which you can check out here. Not only that but his sound has been featured in the Martin Scorsese film The Irishman. He’s out here giving such soulful and passionate performances, it’s no wonder Frederic’s talents brought such a night into fruition.
We at THP love Ed Sheeran and have written some pieces for your further reading. We have articles that prove his music is multi-generational, all you need to know about his Mathematics tour, and his documentary series on Disney+ (which we are loving, by the way!). He was in New York City after playing at the Hard Rock Cafe, New York, so we can see how he swung by during his stay in the city.
The two came together for four songs: a personal fave of ours and classic choice ‘Shape of You,’ and then ‘Aint No Sunshine’, ‘Superstition’, and ‘Be My Husband.’ You can check out clips of the collaboration on Instagram. If you’re in the area and dying to get a peak at this Jazz master, Frederic is playing two more nights this week at Blue Note and will also play the Blue Note Jazz Festival in Napa, an event with a ton of our faves like Mary J. Blige, Nas, Chance the Rapper, Anderson .Paak, Robert Glasper, and Dave Chappelle.
If you need us, we will be watching those clips, wishing that it would be our turn to see something as iconic as this. Are there any other songs that you would love to see Ed Sheeran cover in the future? Let us know by tweeting us @TheHoneyPop or commenting on our Instagram and Facebook pages!
