We couldn’t put down this book, and you’ll see why. Here are three of our favorite things about These Deadly Prophecies by Andrea Tang!
Book Overview
Content Warnings: murder, death, violence, dismemberment, gore, neglect, divorce
Summary: Being an apprentice to one of the world’s most famous sorcerers has its challenges; Tabatha Zeng just didn’t think they would include solving crime. But when her boss, the infamous fortuneteller Sorcerer Solomon, predicts his own brutal death—and worse, it comes true—Tabatha finds herself caught in the crosshairs.
The police have their sights set on her and Callum Solomon, her murdered boss’s youngest son. With suspicion swirling around them, the two decide to team up to find the real killer and clear their own names once and for all.
But solving a murder isn’t as easy as it seems, especially when the suspect list is mostly the rich, connected, and magical members of Sorcerer Solomon’s family. And Tabatha can’t quite escape the nagging voice in her head asking: just how much can she really trust Callum Solomon?
Nothing is as it seems in this quick-witted and fantastical murder mystery.
The Murder Mystery
Have you ever read something and immediately go, “WHOA?” We definitely did because the murder mystery in These Deadly Prophecies took us for a spin. We knew Julian Solomon would die, but we didn’t think it would happen so soon (neither did our protagonist, Tabatha). Then, just when we had an inkling of who we thought the killer was, a new suspect would take their spot. We couldn’t figure it out until Tabatha did. The plot twists were wild, and we felt like there was something that we couldn’t see.
The Sorcery
Another thing we love about These Deadly Prophecies is its eye-catching magic system. There are three kinds of sorcerers: illusionists, kinetics, and prophets. Each of Julian Solomon’s children had a different affinity for sorcery. Prophets are the rarest, and they can use their magic to spin prophecies and tell fortunes. We loved reading about how they used visual sigils or spoken incantations to cast spells. Like when Felix, the eldest Solomon son, summoned his father’s ghost, that was a moment! And we wish we could’ve seen Tabatha use more of her prophetic magic.
The Love Interest
Finally, we love how Andrea Tang wrote Callum Solomon, the love interest and Julian’s only child with an affinity for prophecy. He’s charming and handsome with a heart of gold. And, of course, he’s the popular school jock with almost opposite interests from Tabatha. Tabatha and Callum have no choice but to help each other find Julian’s killer, and they enroll in self-defense classes as an excuse to solve the mystery. The two get closer than ever before, literally and figuratively. They become the ultimate Nancy Drew and Joe Hardy duo, only with an awkwardness that’s very on-brand for teenagers.
