The Interview

Hi Noah! Thank you so much for chatting with us. For the first question, could you give a brief intro about yourself?
I’m Noah, I’m 24, I play a bunch of instruments, write a bunch of music and I grew up on the internet.

You recently opened for Enter Shikari and Fever 333 in the UK. How was that experience for you opening for such iconic bands? Is there something that you learned while opening for them that you are going to take onto future tours?
That tour was honestly insane. I think Shikari are one of the coolest, most important bands out there and I’ve been a fan of Fever 333 since they formed and even before that, I grew up listening to LetLive.. so you can imagine how sick it was being on the road with the both of them.

Probably the biggest thing I’ll take into future tours is the fact that I’m more capable than I believed myself to be! I spent the past few months constantly worrying that I would freeze up at Wembley and embarrass myself in front of over 10,000 people but the fact that I didn’t makes me way less scared for the future.

On the flip side, you are headlining a US tour starting in March! What can fans expect from your set or the tour in general?
A lot of fun! And a lot of new songs from the album that I’ve never played live. I’ve not played any of the album in America so I’m really excited to see the reactions to the new tracks, they’re definitely a step up from my earlier releases but they also go WAY harder live.

Your new album, Growing Up On The Internet, is coming out on March 8 and we cannot wait! What do you hope your fans take away from the album?
Growing Up On The Internet extends solidarity to anybody who feels different, downtrodden, angry or lost. I hope it makes them feel seen, listened to and gives them the motivation to get up and fight back against what the world has just expected them to accept.

You got to work on this album with Danny Jones and Dougie Poynter from McFly! What is a specific memory from your time in the studio with them that you are going to cherish?
So the song we wrote together is called ‘LOVELY LADIES’ and it’s written from the perspective of the “big scary transgender converting your kids” that transphobes and conservatives imagine me to be. I wanted to write down exactly what transphobes tell me I am and put it in a song because as soon as you say it out loud, it sounds as insane as it is.

Before the breakdown, there’s a transphobic hate speech across the song which is word for word taken from a video I found of a transphobic protest. My favourite memory is watching Dougie recreate it.. in his TERF voice… you’ll get it when you’ve heard the song. We were all pissing ourselves laughing.

You have basically grown up on the internet by creating a YouTube channel that has almost 1 million subscribers (congratulations!!!), which makes the album title that much more fitting. What is one piece of advice that you have for the newer generations that are growing up on the internet and might be finding it hard to navigate?
Oh god.. I’d definitely say to remind yourself that the internet gives bigots and general douchebags an opportunity to get away with spouting absolute hateful rubbish anonymously and without repercussions. Don’t take what people on the internet think of you to heart because you really are seeing the worst of the worst and strangers online don’t actually know you.

We have loved getting to know you and your journey through your YouTube channel. How important has it been for you to build out this online community for yourself?
It’s been one of the most important parts of my life for over 10 years now! I turned to the internet when I was going through a lot and it helped me find people who made me feel like I wasn’t alone. I lived most of my life on the internet because it was the only place I could be myself and the fact that this community is not only responsible for me finally understanding and accepting myself, but it’s also responsible for me being able to travel the world doing what I love is honestly indescribable.

Out of the singles that have been released from your upcoming album, our current favorite is ‘3 Day Headache.’ What is your favorite song from the album today and has it changed at all from when you started putting the album together?
I honestly have a new favourite every day, it depends on the mood. Right now it’s ‘ALEXITHYMIA,’ I just filmed the music video for it a few days ago and I’m so excited to see how people feel about the song, it’s definitely a wildcard. I think when I first started writing the album, ‘I KNOW BETTER’ was my favourite but it’s been so long since I wrote it and it’s been out for a while so obviously the excitement fades. Still love that song though.

We are always so curious about an artist’s way of creating. When you are finally deciding to put together a body of work, do you prefer to have a full concept in mind that the album will go along with or do you like to come in with no ideas and just let it all flow and find the common theme later?
Definitely the second one – I didn’t know what the album was going to be until I wrote ‘GROWING UP ON THE INTERNET.’ Although as soon as I recorded the first voice note of the first verse, I knew that the album had to be about my experience growing up online. It was very exciting realising that’s what I wanted to write about because I had SO MUCH to say.

Last question! Other than your new album and upcoming US tour, is there anything else that you want The Honey POP readers to know?
That you GOTTA listen to the album in the order of the tracklist. They’re ordered in a specific way for a reason – set aside 30 minutes and just read along to the lyrics!

How incredible was that interview? We loved getting the chance to know more about Noah and everything that he has going on in his career. Make sure you pre-save and pre-order ‘GROWING UP ON THE INTERNET’!
