We think now is as good as any time to talk about messy royal family drama! And no, we’re not talking about IRL royal families, although it’s all over our timelines. We’re talking about the fictional royal family in Aimée Carter’s new YA thriller, Royal Scandal!
Royal Scandal is book two in Aimée Carter’s Royal Blood trilogy that reimagines the modern-day British monarchy. The main character, Evan Bright, is the American illegitimate daughter of the King. While the first book centers around a murder mystery, the second focuses on Evan narrowly avoiding repeated assassination attempts.
We’re suckers for palace intrigue with high stakes, and Royal Scandal delivers. And trust us when we say book two gets even more dramatic than the first! Here are three of our favorite things about Royal Scandal by Aimée Carter!

Book Overview
Content Warnings: attempted murder and assassination, death, death threats, violence, gore, bombings, mental illness, divorce (Read at your discretion!)
Summary: American girl turned monarchy nightmare, Evan Bright, has gotten used to the press about her but the media attention has only seemed to get worse.
From desperate clickbait articles about her and the President’s son to Royal Record headlines pitting her against Princess Maisie, it seems everyone is dying for Evan to return back to America for good. Meanwhile Evan is receiving mysterious threats about her real story being revealed in a tell-all biography.
When more information is leaked about Evan, she fears she will always be Britain’s media villain. But the threats escalate when there is an attempted assassination with no suspects…and Evan believes the person is in the palace’s walls.
They say what doesn’t kill you will make you stronger…but what if it’s the royal family who wants you dead?
The Rich Plot
The plot in Royal Scandal by Aimée Carter hooks you from the first page! We’re on Evan’s side no matter what happens to her, especially now that a certain royal is back from Kenya. And we’ll try not to spoil the plot too much. Evan survives not one, not two, but three attempts on her life, only to be blamed for the danger surrounding the royal family. She desperately needs to catch the true culprit, though we still don’t know how she plans to do it. (What an illegal cliffhanger!) We can only speculate until the next book comes out.
Evan And Kit
Evan’s relationship with Kit, the Earl of Clarence, is one of the healthiest we’ve seen! We can’t get over how caring and understanding Kit is toward Evan. He’s everything Evan needs in a partner, even if he keeps some borderline illegal secrets. But what’s a royal match without the drama? Even when everything and everyone seems to test the strength of Evan and Kit’s relationship, we know they’ll last. They’re our OTP, and we hope to see them as endgame in book three!
The Press
Amidst all the family drama and assassination attempts in Royal Scandal, each chapter includes a news article or interview transcript from outside the palace. Sometimes, we get tweet updates or even mysterious texts from within. Either way, we absolutely love how the author incorporates the press into the story. It makes it seem like what we’re reading is all happening in real time. We get some much-needed context from these excerpts, and it’s so much fun to follow along!
Aimée Carter’s Royal Scandal balances a well-paced palace drama with an edge-of-your-seat thriller that’ll have you gasping audibly and racing through each page!
Royal Scandal by Aimée Carter is available March 26th, and you can preorder a copy of it here!
