Hey, Upper East Siders, The Honey POP here! And we have some music recs that can take your playlists from rags to riches, Gossip Girl style. Of course, these recs come from none other than Ariana Grande, one of the queens of pop music who also knows how to appreciate a good teen soap. Not only has she tweeted about watching the show, but ‘positions’ made the soundtrack of the reboot and she cast none other than Mr. Dan Humphrey as her love interest for ‘the boy is mine’ music video!
If you love Ariana and Gossip Girl as much as we do, keep reading for our guesses of which characters would stan which songs!
Dan Humphrey: ‘the boy is mine’
Come on, we had to choose this song for Dan after seeing Penn Badgley play Ariana’s love interest in the music video! ‘the boy is mine’ is so Dan-coded otherwise though, especially when you consider his full arc. A chance encounter with Serena, his longtime crush, in season one turns his world upside down and welcomes him into the Upper East Side. And later in the show, he winds up dating Blair after he helps her get away from her wedding to Louis.
He’d relate to the music video so much as well. Even if he doesn’t get all dressed up as Catwoman to win Serena or Blair over, he’d connect to Ariana’s dedication in winning over her crush. Seriously, the boy ran an entire gossip blog to get into the in-crowd and feel like he fit in!
Key lyric: “The stars, they aligned…”
Serena van der Woodsen: ‘goodnight n go’
If there’s one thing you should know about Serena van der Woodsen, it’s that she has to go. Seriously, spend a bit of time in a Gossip Girl fandom space and you’ll find entire video compilations of her saying she has to go throughout the series! But another reason we think she’d love ‘goodnight n go’ is because it sounds so dreamy, but the lyrics are kind of sad – Serena is described as the it-girl, but she deals with various traumas behind closed doors. Love her or hate her, it’s impossible to ignore her.
Key lyric: “I got you, I got you dreaming…”
Blair Waldorf: ‘positions’
One look at that iconic music video where Ariana flips from president to loyal lover and Blair would be a certified ‘positions’ stan! Throughout the show, Blair deals with all sorts of insecurities, and a lot of her mean-girl persona is actually a coping mechanism that she established to fit in on the Upper East Side. She can effortlessly go from Queen B at school to a supportive best friend to Serena, then a passionate partner for Chuck, and an unruly boss to Dorota. Dan’s Inside book even describes her as “small yet giant. Young yet adult. Girlish yet macho.” Get you a girl who can do it all!
Key lyrics: “I’m in the Olympics, way I’m jumping through hoops…”
Nate Archibald: ‘successful’
First off, our resident golden retriever Nate would totally be an Ariana stan. He’s one of the only main characters on the show to come from old money, but he refuses to let his family’s legacy define him. That’s why he’s so passionate about running The Spectator, an online and print newspaper. He’s eager to find success on his own and he does just that! He’s also willing to help his friends get a leg up through the newspaper on various occasions, between letting Serena write her own column and hosting excerpts from Dan’s Inside Out novel.
Key lyric: “You too, you are so young and beautiful and so successful…”
Chuck Bass: ‘7 rings’
From girls to luxury properties, Chuck Bass finds a way to get pretty much anything he sees, likes, and wants. Fan calculations typically find that Chuck is one of the richest characters because of his father’s real estate and business investments, so he has plenty of money to toss around in the city. Something we love about ‘7 rings’ is the undercurrent of friendship, and behind his riches and fancy suits, Chuck deeply cares about the people in his life even if he doesn’t always show it in the most straightforward ways. The Breakfast At Tiffany’s reference in the lyrics would also tie into his love for the Hepburn-obsessed Blair!
Key lyric: “Look at my neck, look at my jet, ain’t got enough money to pay me respect…”
Jenny Humphrey: ‘Popular Song’ (With MIKA)
Given Jenny’s hopes to become one of the most popular girls in school, we think ‘Popular Song’ would be a staple on her playlist! She follows Blair’s lead in the beginning as she tries to be the perfect minion, but eventually becomes the new Queen Bee as the tides change. “Now you’re in the front row because my song is popular” would also be a cool meta moment now that Taylor Momsen is the lead singer of The Pretty Reckless.
Key lyric: “I never was a model, I never was a scholar, but you were always popular…”
Vanessa Abrams: ‘Bad Decisions’
Vanessa is one of the main outsiders of the show but often gives in to the pressure the “insiders” put on her, for better or worse. For better, she spent her childhood being homeschooled until Nate encouraged her to take the SAT so she could apply to a traditional college like she wanted to. On the “worse” side, Vanessa’s feelings for Dan (and against Serena) eventually push her to make some pretty bad decisions and get involved with Juliet Sharp’s plan to get revenge on Serena. The revenge plot ends with a hospital visit for Serena and everything goes downhill from there. Shouldn’t have gotten involved there, V!
Key lyric: “I been doing stupid things, wilder than I’ve ever been…”
Georgina Sparks: ‘Dangerous Woman’
Our first encounter with Georgina is when she anonymously sends Serena all sorts of wild, borderline-creepy gifts that call back to their old antics once S had already moved forward. Once she comes back to town, she butts heads with the main characters several times before eventually helping them with some schemes… which she’s eerily skilled at. From acting naïve to bust a scammer to tricking Dan into thinking he’s the father of her child, she can be totally conniving when she wants to be.
Key lyric: “Bad girls underneath like that, you know how I’m feeling inside…”
Eric van der Woodsen: ‘get well soon’
When we first meet Eric in season one, he’s recovering from a dip in his mental health and staying at the Ostroff Center. Yet he goes on to become one of the most beloved characters on the show, always there to support Serena and his step-sister, Jenny, even when Jenny tosses him aside to “work [her] way to the top” as the Queen of Constance. He’s too wholesome to get too invested in the drama on the show, but he does give us some iconic one-liners like “your sweet potatoes are bland.” 10/10 character and brother, no notes.
Key lyric: “When you need someone to pull you out the bubble, I’ll be right there just to hug you…”
Ivy Dickens: ‘we can’t be friends (wait for your love)’
As an aspiring actress whose home life wasn’t too great, Ivy is excited to help Carol Rhodes and pretend to be Serena’s cousin, Charlie. The pressure increases even after she leaves NYC, and she runs into Serena in LA. Serena invites her to come back and live the Upper East Side life she secretly always dreamed of, but things don’t go so well when the real Charlie, who now goes by Lola, returns. Ivy hates the idea of losing out on the only real family she’s ever known – she can’t quite “let this story die” and goes head-to-head with Lily van der Woodsen, finding a way to take over her apartment and date not one, but two of her ex-husbands.
Key lyric: “Know that you made me, I don’t like how you paint me, yet I’m still here hanging…”
