We would be lying to you if we said our brains were the same after we heard MUNA by MUNA for the first time. This album not only rewired our brain chemistry but infiltrated our entire lives. We’ve been massive fans of MUNA since they released About U back in 2017. And it’s beyond safe to say that with every album MUNA continues to prove not only their immense talent but that they are only going to continue to raise the bar. Whether you’re still trying to get over how good ‘Anyone But You’ is, or ready to celebrate the beauty of MUNA in its entirety, we have our own picks off the album we have to talk about.
‘What I Want’
Where better to start than with what we consider to be one of the best anthems ever made? ‘What I Want’ is a declaration of living life for yourself, but also living it up with the people you love the most. And what do we want you might be wondering? We want to hear ‘What I Want’ in a gay bar, at full effect, while we hit it hard, and while we get the chemistry from that girl right over there that we want to date us! (The ones who get it, get it!)
“I want the full effects, I wanna hit it hard. I wanna dance in the middle of a gay bar”
‘Shooting Star’
‘Shooting Star’ is the kind of song that crawled into our brains and simply never left once we heard it for the first time. The synths backing Katie’s ethereal vocals could take us to another dimension if we let them. Phoebe Bridgers said once in an interview that her favorite thing about MUNA is that they can create beautiful pop songs without ever compromising words within their lyrics. We agreed with her then, and we agreed with her even more after hearing this one. Comparing someone who you are enamored with to something that you can never catch or see for long enough, like a shooting star, is not only a breathtaking comparison but lyrical genius in our opinions.
“So I say “Goodnight, make it home” like I’m making a wish. On you, from afar. You, my shooting star”
‘No Idea’
MUNA has this way of making a song that just feels downright sexy when you listen to it. And ‘No Idea’ is the perfect example of that. Not to mention how much we lose our minds when they perform this one live. Seeing Katie and Jo interact the way they do on stage only makes us want to obsess over this one even more!
“You seem like such a good thing, a good thing. I know that good things take time”
‘Home By Now’
Speaking of songs that entirely rewired our brain chemistry, we have never been able to get this one out of our heads since we heard it for the first time. Not only is this song absolutely obsession worthy from an instrumental standpoint, but we are absolute suckers for Katie’s lower range. This song could bring us back from the dead, completely restore our mental health, and see us through the darkest storms.
“I don’t know if I’d been okay with holding out hope for your stack of rain checks. If I had been able to grin and bear it would we be home by now?”
‘Loose Garment’
Where does one even begin when talking about the masterpiece that is ‘Loose Garment?’ This is a song that makes us feel so seen, heard, and understood. Comparing your sadness that you try to shake, but sometimes just can’t, like a choker is so real to us. Sometimes we can’t evade the feelings that come along with the parts of our past that we might not be the proudest of. But knowing we aren’t alone in that is so freeing. MUNA’s rendition of this on their Tiny Desk concert also just made us even more enamored with this one!
“Used to wear my sadness like a choker, yeah, it had me by the throat. Tonight I feel I’m draped in it, like a loose garment, I just let it flow”
‘Kind Of Girl’
This song not only means a lot to MUNA but a lot to us. ‘King Of Girl’ is all about growth and change, and accepting that growth is a constant process. Always being committed to your own evolution is not only a hard task but one that takes constant awareness and effort. Having this song as our backing track to our continuous growth is beautiful and kismet.
“Yeah, I like telling stories, but I don’t have to write them in ink. I could still change the end. At least I’m the kind of girl, I’m the kind of girl who thinks I can.”
‘Silk Chiffon’
How could we not end on the iconic track that is ‘Silk Chiffon?’ This song is not only iconic in the pop music scene, and gay scene, but also in the Honey Pop scene. We haven’t stopped putting this song in all of our playlists since we heard it for the very first time. Adding Phoebe Bridgers to the mix was not only a genius-level move but one that proves the power of MUNA altogether in our eyes. And yeah, we are anxious when inside of a CVS too, Phoebe.
“And life’s so fun, life’s so fun, got my mini skirt and my rollerblades on. Bag on my side ’cause I’m out ’til dawn, keeping it light like silk chiffon.”
If we’re being honest, every single track on MUNA is worth writing about. This is not only a no-skip album, but evidence of their constant growth and evolution. We’re genuinely chomping at the bit to see what they do next. We’ll have our eyes glued to their socials for their next album and era, but we will never move on from this one.
