Cho Seung Youn or WOODZ is a South Korean musician who debuted in the South Korean-Chinese group UNIQ in 2014 and as a soloist in 2016. He has experimented with genre and concept without limit so it is a musical delight with each album. From producing to performing he demonstrates his craftsmanship. As he is undergoing his military service it is the ideal time to reacquaint or introduce oneself to his discography starting with these five songs.
‘Accident’
Cho Seung Youn debuted as WOODZ with the powerful and melancholic ‘Accident’. He describes his relationship with a woman who ignores him at best and spurns him at worst. As he discovers she is the problem he remedies the chorus from “I know it’s accident, not your fault” to “it is not accident, it’s your fault.”
His vocals inspire showing that although he was a main rapper in UNIQ he is an outstanding singer as well!
‘AMNESIA’
There are moments that people wish to forget. Such is the focus of ‘AMNESIA’, a heart-rending song in which Cho Seung Youn medicates with alcohol and tobacco to forget and escape from real life.
“Something’s wrong / Actually, I’m running away,” he acknowledges. “I was too scared.” His candor and sentiment are affecting and universal – and that much more impactful! And as a testament to his producing, in between the verses are guitar riffs that enrich the atmosphere of the song.
‘Better and Better’
‘Better and Better’ is a smile in audio. Cho Seung Youn describes his amour as “the sun, it wakes me up” over high-spirited music. He promises he will stand beside them and their love can withstand “strong wind” and “raging waves.” How romantic!
‘Busted’
Revenge is transformative in ‘Busted.’ In a R&B and K-Pop combination, Cho Seung Youn longs for the destruction of his partner who “cracked our love.” He is prepared to become the villain and it is empowering as the instrumental builds with the lyrics. Each “busted” is punctuated with a stomping guitar line in which the listener visualizes him gearing up for his vengeance.
‘WAITING’
As the promotional track for Only Lovers Left, ‘WAITING’ is sweet-sounding but no less tragic in narrative. He realizes that his partner is held on to another and he no longer recognizes them but waits for them even as he is torn up about it (“Oh, why you make me crazy / Why are you doing this to me? / Make me bleed yeah”).
