On the day this is posted it will be July 9th, so naturally, as Swifties, we had to write about ‘Last Kiss.’ ‘Last Kiss‘ comes from the third studio album (which Taylor Swift entirely self-wrote at nineteen) Speak Now, and is widely considered by us, and many others, to be one of the saddest songs in her discography. We listen to this track and cry regularly, so we didn’t even have to look at the lyrics, we knew which lyrics hit us the hardest immediately. We broke down six of the lines from this track that still hit as hard as the day we first heard them, fourteen years ago.
“I still remember the look on your face, Lit through the darkness at 1:58“
The specificity Taylor Swift manages to put into her lyrics, while with some artist may make the listeners feel isolated, always draws us in more, and makes us feel like we can more closely relate.
Going back to a specific moment with someone that stood out so specifically that you remembered the time in which it occurred is a level of down bad we have indeed been.
“All that i know is i don’t know how to be something you miss“
This was one of the first Taylor Swift lyrics that’s genuinely broke our hearts. And we still see lyrical parallels in her music today, like in ‘The Black Dog,’ Taylor sings “I just don’t understand, how you don’t miss me.”
Searching for reasons why you aren’t being missed is a devastating reality.
“I’m not much for dancing but for you i did“
We all know that feeling, being with the person who brings you out of your comfort zone, who makes you feel free doing the things that once would have scared you.
“So i’ll watch your life in pictures like i used to watch you sleep“
This line actually did illicit tears. This is such a devastating look into the phase after a soul crushing break up where you can’t imagine life without the other person, so you still check in. It feels different, but it’s better than nothing. No matter how sad.
“And i hope the sun shines and it’s a beautiful day, And something reminds you you wish you had stayed”
Should we be wishing our exes think about us and wish they would have stayed? Probably not, but have we? Obviously! There’s a part of us that of course hopes it’s always a situation of them realizing what they lost. We’re glad Taylor Swift has shared that experience with us.
“You can plan for a change in the weather and time, But i never planned on your changing your mind”
We had to end this list of our favorite ‘Last Kiss’ lyrics with what is arguably one of Taylor’s best in her discography. This line still feels like a punch in the gut. It encompasses how it feels to have losing someone be so far out of your control.
