It’s official, we have found your next favorite band in daysormay! We have been tuned in to daysormay since their collaboration with Tessa Violet, and are fully convinced their upcoming project is going to be full of their best work yet, so now is the best time to jump on board! We got to chat with daysormay about MODERATION, and so much more, we hope you enjoy!
Stream ‘IN BUT NOT OF’ here!
Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us! To start us off, can you tell our readers a bit about daysormay, how would you describe your sound/what you want to get across with your music?
Carson: We grew up together playing music and have always wanted to take it as far as we can. I really believe we sound like ourselves, and I always encourage people to label it themselves.
Aidan: We’re 3 friends from Vernon, BC. We’ve known each other since we were 7 years old (Carson and Nolan are twin brothers so they met a bit earlier), and we started learning how to play music together when we were about 10 or 11. It started as a lot of Rise Against and Green Day covers, and then evolved into writing our own songs, and eventually grew into learning how to produce as well.
I would say we create music in the same way that we consume it, so it’s a wide spectrum of sounds and influences, but I feel that you can hear “us” in all of it.
We are sure you’ve heard this question before, but we have to ask, where did the name daysormay come from?
Carson: “daysormay” is the phonetic pronunciation of the French word “désormais” which means from now on. The beauty of the name is it can mean so much to anyone because you can always grow, move forward and strive for the best version of yourself. At least that’s what it means to me.
‘IN BUT NOT OF’ is the latest single, which is from the same upcoming project as ‘SIMMER,’ what was is about these two tracks that made you want to have them be the first glimpse of MODERATION?
Carson: The day we made ‘SIMMER’ we knew it was the in your face, bold and punchy sound we had been searching for. It was obvious to us this song would be a very exciting way to launch our album rollout.
Aidan: ‘IN BUT NOT OF’ is the other side of ‘SIMMER,’ in my opinion. The drums still knock, and it’s driving, but it’s more self-aware and introspective. It felt like a nice response to ‘SIMMER.’
And speaking of MODERATION, this will mark the first album since 2021, what do you think, as a group, you guys learned during the rollout of Just Existing that you’re taking with you this time around?
Carson: We have learned so much about ourselves and each other and we had to take a different approach to creating. We were finishing Just Existing while doing the rollout and that was a main point this time around we knew had to change.
Aidan: The main change for us internally was learning to make decisions off of feeling, instead of thought. ‘Chin’ was a huge inspiration for that way of working, we were only changing things in the songs if it felt right to do so, none of the creative choices were made from an analytical point of view.
Nolan: I think mostly it’s to not think too much. Just to trust our gut basically. ‘Chin’ was a big part in encouraging that like Carson said and I’m super grateful for that.
‘Role Model’ was a huge moment for you guys! From the song being so well received by fans to getting to collaborate with the incredible Tessa Violet, how did that come about?
Carson: It actually all started with a tweet. Our friend tweeted at Tessa when she was looking for openers in Portland Oregon. Even though we didn’t play the show, Tessa took a listen to our music. So after touring with her and our debut album getting finished so we had to ask if she would feature on it.
Aidan: Tessa was looking for an opener for a show in Portland, and our friend Morgan tweeted our stuff to her. We couldn’t make it to Portland, but she asked us to come do a run of shows with her in the US later that year, and we really bonded. She loved ‘Role Model’ and we had done a video for her channel of us both playing it acoustically, so it just felt right to ask her if she wanted to feature on it. It was honestly a life-changing time for us, and I credit her for us being in a lot of the situations we get to be in now. It was so incredible to be so welcomed by her fanbase, they’re the sweetest people.
When we imagine crafting music within a group dynamic we imagine there are both things that become easier, and harder when you look at that joint creative process can you pinpoint both a strong suit you guys share, and a common struggle when creating?
Carson: When it comes to the creative process it is a strength to have two other talented people who you can bounce ideas off of. Having those other trusted points of view is super helpful. It can be difficult coming to a conclusion on ideas or which songs should make the projects but ultimately we are all always agreed that we try to create the best we can to our ability.
Aidan: Yeah agreed, our strength is that we’ve known each other for so long, and we’ve played together for so long, that our instincts are usually pretty in sync. I haven’t fully figured out how to verbalize it yet, but there’s like a synergy there, where we can make moves without speaking to each other, but we’re still all on the same page. A common struggle for us is honestly just getting bored of an idea and moving on to something else prematurely, in my opinion.
MODERATION will be out so soon! Is there a specific song on the record that you all have been most excited for fans to get to hear?
Carson: Yes! What’s special with this album is they’re all my favorites depending on what I’m feeling. ‘AUTO’ is my favorite reaction on the whole album but I truly think there is something for everybody on this one.
Aidan: I love ‘UV,’ because it just came out of us and we didn’t alter it much. It was all feeling, no analyzing. But I do truly love all of them, and I can’t wait to see what resonates with people.
Nolan: For me it’s probably ‘ALL I HAVE.’ For me, it’s super captivating and when I heard the first version of it that Aidan sent to me and Carson I had to take a minute and process what I just heard from a lyrical standpoint. It’s a special one.
Keeping on track with talking about MODERATION, from the moment the album started being crafted to the release date, how long was the process of crafting this record?
Aidan: About 2 years. We didn’t really zone in on the idea of an album until early 2022, but we had been writing sporadically since Just Existing came out. It was initially a much different sound, a lot more aggressive, and it took us a while to find a balance that felt right.
To bring it back to ‘IN BUT NOT OF’ the lyrics to this track pack quite a punch, can you speak to what the track represents for you guys?
Aidan: I wrote most of the verse at my parents’ house in Vernon, on the same piano that I’ve written so many songs with before. I had just left Vancouver impulsively a few days before on a one-way ticket, and I didn’t know how long I would be away. The pressure of the album had been pretty crushing at the time, and I basically ran away from it. The lyrics just came out of me, I didn’t think about them much, but they felt like a step towards translating what I was feeling then.
Once again, thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us! Before we let you go, what is the rest of 2024 shaping up to look like for daysormay? Are live shows in the cards?
Carson: Thanks for having us! We are super excited about MODERATION and do have some shows around the release with hopes of more touring in late 2024 and 2025.
