We introduced you to Ravyn Lenae a while back through her song ‘Dream Girl’ and we’re back to share more of her music with you! Her new track ‘One Wish’ ft. Childish Gambino just dropped and we’re obsessed. She calls it “one of the most important songs on the album” and for good reason.

‘One Wish’ talks about Ravyn’s relationship with her dad, which is a complex one.
‘One Wish’ is one of the most important songs on the album b/c it highlights the complex relationship I’ve had with my Dad,” … The lyrics remember my 10th birthday + feeling upset that he couldn’t make it. It was important for me to address these built-up emotions in song in order for us to now be on a beautiful path of genuinely learning [about] each other + rekindling. Something valuable I’ve learned is being able to really humanize my loved ones and understand the context around people more deeply. I love you Dad and so happy we’re here.

Knowing the background of the track and how it relates to her birthday makes lyrics like “I can’t spend this one wish on you” more impactful. We also love the juxtaposition of the last lines, going from “I can’t forgive you no matter how hard I try I can’t forget you” to “And I can’t hate you no matter how hard I try I just pretend to.”
Diving into a subject like this can be so difficult. Ravyn has spoken about this a little but her relationship with her father has grown and changed and ‘One Wish’ is important for that reason. She even had him feature in the music video as himself, saying that she was nervous about it because she still had to explain the meaning of the song to him and didn’t want his feelings to be hurt. We commend Ravyn for the vulnerability and strength it takes to lay yourself out to fans like that and put your story and your feelings out there.
One of the most beautiful things about making ‘Bird’s Eye’ was the amount of reflection that was required to truly tell a story that felt clear and honest. Digging into the nooks + crannies of my journey so far was so rewarding in many ways, but it’s most meaningful when it manifests into tangible change in my life

We love the production on the track and how it couples with her airy and crystal-clear vocals. It really drives home the emotion and vulnerability behind the track. And the Childish Gambino feature is perfect too. His vocals complement hers perfectly and really fit in with the sound of the track. The music video, directed by Andre Muir provides the perfect visual backdrop to tell the story behind ‘One Wish’ and it adds to what we love about Ravyn Lenae. Her artistry is something special and we can’t wait to see where it takes her in the future.
