As you know, we here at The Honey POP are somewhat obsessed with musicals. So you can bet we’re over the moon with Wicked finally being adapted into a movie or two movies. That’s right. The team behind the adaptation understands this story so well they quickly realized that trying to cram the entire musical into a single two-hour movie wouldn’t work. So, they’ll be dividing the adaptation into two parts. The first one is around the corner and comes out on November 22. Meanwhile, Part Two is set to come out around the same time next year.
And now that we got the very basics out of the way, let’s get into why we’re here today: a new official Wicked trailer just dropped! And boy, did they manage to get us (even more) hyped with it! In only two and a half minutes, we saw little snippets of scenes we loved from the stage musical. We cannot wait to see it on screen and hear a little bit of ‘Defying Gravity,’ aka the musical’s most iconic song, in the voices of the lovely leading duo Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. So much has happened in the trailer. We thought we could come here and break it down for you (and we’ll throw in a little bit of our own theories about the movie as well).

Who Were They Before The Wizard Of Oz?
Firstly, we have to mention how amazing it is that the trailer starts with a bit of background about the story of Wicked for people who may not be familiar with it. Between Ariana Grande’s lovely narration and the title cards, the trailer quickly tells us this story is set in Oz. But long before Dorothy and Toto were dropped there by a tornado. This time, the side characters of The Wizard of Oz take center stage. We know we’ll see how and why Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda (the Good Witch of the North) are the way they are and how far back their history with each other goes.
Speaking of the lovely duo, additionally, we get a taste of their vocals singing ‘Defying Gravity’ throughout the trailer, which is undeniably Wicked’s most popular and iconic song. We got literally chills listening to their version and seeing all the scenes playing with the song. We also get one line from the movie that has our heads spinning: Elphaba talks to Fyiero and says, “I don’t cause commotions. I am one.” That line hits so hard coming from Elphaba because it sums up how she’s felt her whole life, and having that line in the trailer conveys that message in the best way possible.
What Can We Expect Next?
Another thing we noticed in the trailer is the snippets of the scene between Elphaba and Glinda right before Elphaba flees the tower and, by extension, Oz itself. Without giving up the musical’s spoilers, we’ll say that this scene is highly emotional and extremely important in shaping Elphaba and Glinda into the characters we know from The Wizard of Oz. Check out the trailer below and see for yourself what we’re talking about:
And this is where our speculation starts to come in. In the stage version, this is where Act One ends, and many think this is where Part One of the movie will end, too. But we have a theory that Part One will actually end a bit later. This is especially based on the scenes of Elphaba flying above Oz that appear at the end of the trailer. In these scenes, the Wicked Witch already has her iconic pointy hat on and looks anything but frightened like she usually feels for most of the story, leading us to believe that this flight takes place after she embraces her true self and becomes the famous Wicked Witch of the West.
In summary, we love the Wicked trailer and are counting the days until November 22 to watch it in cinemas. But what about you? Will you join us in the theatres to watch the first part of Wicked? Tell us on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram. You know we love to hear from you!
