It’s no secret that we LOVE Grayscale here at THP! If you’ve been here a while then you know that we talk about them any chance we get. We’ve spent a lot of time covering their new singles: ‘Not Afraid to Die’ and ‘Summer Clothes’, saw them live earlier in the summer, and even rattled off some of our hopes for their upcoming era! Although we can’t wait to see what Grayscale has in store for the future, it’s always fun to look back on the moments that brought us here!
Grayscale’s 2019 album Nella Vita is one that is so very special to us. The title directly translates to “In Life” in Latin, which perfectly summarizes the work. Thematically, the album discusses love and loss, good and bad, falling both in and out of love, things we have all experienced in life. Every moment of Nella Vita is personal and heartfelt and has rightfully earned its place on the album. Each track is full of lyrics that will leave you screaming, crying, and throwing up but also instrumentals that will make you want to get up and dance.
In honor of the album’s fifth anniversary, here are our five favorite songs from Nella Vita:
‘Just Right’
Obviously we had to include ‘Just Right’ in this list! This song contains all the essential traits of Nella Vita from deep feelings and upbeat lyrics. It’s the perfect opener to the album (and to their live shows, if you ask us) and sets the stage for what is to come!
“I’d give it all just to
Feel that alive again
Righted my wrongs
Made my bads feel fine
I’m homesick for you
And I don’t know why”
‘In Violet’
We may be biased but this might be one of the strongest songs in Grayscale’s discography. The track draws us in with twinkly guitars and leaves us hooked the whole time. This song is another setlist staple in our hearts, and we look forward to seeing it brought to life every time we see Grayscale live. ‘In Violet’ truly makes us want to “dance the pain away”.
“I’m out of faith
Can you feel my rage?
I’ve fallen far from grace
Come take me far away
Dizzy with hate
All I know is love and pain”
‘YOUNG’
‘YOUNG’ is another Nella Vita song that is very near and dear to our hearts. This track is a lot heavier and punchier than the rest of the album, but still has rightfully earned its place. The song is an anthem for not giving up on yourself and finding the best in your darkest moments.
“I think I’m better than just
Giving up in the pouring rain
I think I’d rather love
Than be a heart of stone
That can’t be saved”
‘Painkiller Weather’
This song may be a controversial pick, but ‘Painkiller’ was the first single released to signify the start of the Nella Vita era, so it will always be a little nostalgic for us. No matter how you may feel about the song, there’s no denying it’s fun and catchy!
“Showed me patience, taught me honesty and decadence
Warm behind my eyes, watched your motions falling out of love”
‘What’s On Your Mind’
Lyrically and conceptually, ‘What’s On Your Mind’ may be one of the strongest songs on the album. The track is a perfect example of the detailed narratives of real experiences Grayscale wanted to bring to life with Nella Vita. Like most of the album, it taps into a more vulnerable moment in time and not being afraid to share those feelings.
“The rings I jumped through
To try and please you
A constant climb
I swim to you through
A sea of issues I can’t deny
But I guess we’re fine”
