As longtime Sabrina Carpenter fans (we’re talking back to the Austin & Ally and Girl Meets World days), it’s been so exhilarating to see her become one of the biggest names on the music scene! She’s ridiculously talented, and it feels like the world is finally seeing what a superstar she is. That’s especially true now that we have her latest album, Short n’ Sweet, in our lives and all over the charts.
Short n’ Sweet marks Sabrina’s first Billboard 200-topping album, and it’s spent two weeks at #1 on the chart since it came out! Only two albums have had a second week that big in the past year, proving Sabrina is a total force to be reckoned with. In its first week, the album earned 362,000 equivalent album units, including 184,000 physical sales. Compare that to the 18,000 equivalent first-week units she earned with emails i can’t send in 2022, and you’ll see how amazing her rise has truly been.
Musically, the record perfectly balances Sabrina’s savvy and sassy sides and incorporates her charm in such a beautiful way. To celebrate the success of Short n’ Sweet and Sabrina’s brilliant new era, let’s look at some standout lyrics from the album!
“Heartbreak is one thing, my ego’s another / I beg you, don’t embarrass me, motherf*cker…”
Starting off strong with one of the internet’s favorite lyrics! ‘Please Please Please’ sees Sabrina begging her partner not to make her look bad, and this line made us burst out laughing when we first heard it. It showcases the smart, sassy aspect of the album that Sabrina pulls off so well, and it’s such a real message that so many people can relate to. It’s one thing to go through heartbreak, but it’s another thing to worry that the friends who told you your partner is bad news will get to have their “I told you so” moment!
“Break my heart and I swear I’m moving on with your favorite athlete…”
Another bold line we love comes from ‘Good Graces,’ on which Sabrina warns a guy not to treat her badly. This track shows off her confident side in such an infectious way, and this lyric in particular really jumps out to us. She knows she can land any man she wants, including someone her current lover admires, and dating his favorite athlete would mean his social feeds would be covered in photos of her after their breakup. Talk about a strong revenge plan!
“You told me the truth, minus seven percent…”
‘Coincidence’ stands out as one of the sadder songs on Short n’ Sweet, which Sabrina rocks just as well as the more upbeat anthems. Throughout the song, she thinks about how her partner seems a little too friendly with his ex, to the point where it’s making her doubt the authenticity of their relationship together. We think this lyric is such a clever way to say he’s not being fully honest with her, and the idea that he’s just a little short of telling the full truth ties into the album title.
“I can’t relate to desperation, my give-a-f*cks are on vacation…”
The Short n’ Sweet era kicked off with a bang thanks to ‘Espresso,’ which pretty much everyone can agree was 2024’s official Song Of The Summer. It has such a Cool Girl vibe that really rubs off on you as you listen, so you can channel some of Sabrina’s unstoppable confidence while you sing along! This lyric is a perfect reminder that you don’t have to chase anything that’s meant for you since it will come your way on its own. It’s better to focus on yourself and your well-being than on a flip-flopping guy or what others might think of you.
“Just ‘cause you talk like one doesn’t make you a man…”
Speaking of less-than-reliable guys, Sabrina totally calls one out on ‘Dumb & Poetic,’ and we’re obsessed. This line in particular has totally jumped out at us not just because of how scathing it is, but because someone’s actions always speak louder than their words. The boy Sabrina is singing about might know how to sweet-talk her, but he doesn’t behave or treat her like a real man or life partner would. She knows her worth and won’t let him spin the truth!
“This boy doesn’t even know the difference between ‘there,’ ‘their,’ and ‘they are…’”
This one is for all the writers out there, including us at THP! ‘Slim Pickins’ describes Sabrina’s disappointment in the modern dating pool, as well as the average guy’s grammar knowledge. This lyric is definitely one of the funniest ones on Short n’ Sweet and stands out even more when you consider Sabrina has writing credits on every song from the album. She can do all that, but he makes simple typing mistakes that make her question whether he can keep up or put proper effort into their connection.
“We love to mistake butterflies for cardiac arrest…”
It was hard to pick a single lyric from ‘Lie To Girls’ to include here since it perfectly captures what it’s like to be a hopeless romantic dreamer girl, but we ultimately decided on this one because of the metaphor! The feeling of butterflies comes up for most people in the beginning of a relationship, while cardiac arrest is a severe situation that could even lead to death. It shows how Sabrina and fellow hopeless romantics might assume passing feelings (and relationships like the one she describes throughout the album) are more serious than they really are.
