If it were illegal to steal hearts, ILLIT would have been under arrest more times than we could count by now! The girls are back with their new mini-album, BREAK EVEN, and it’s a guarantee that you’ll be ‘Super In Love’ with at least one track. Each of these four new songs are further proof that Yunah, Minju, Wonhee, and Iroha consistently bring so much energy to everything they put out – though we of course miss Moka, who’s out on hiatus, and will be adding the Group GLLIT album version to our cart so we can get her photocard. ILLIT have enchanted K-Pop fans around the world time and time again, sparking over half a million Spotify pre-saves before they released the mini-album.
The members gave GLLIT a sneak peek at the title track, ‘You’re Under Arrest,’ during their PRESS START♥︎ encore shows in October, and it was clear from the start that it’d become a hit. This song is so irresistibly catchy that it should be a crime! Sonically, it feels like a natural follow-up to ILLIT’s latest electropop singles, ‘It’s Me’ and ‘ICONIC BY MISTAKE’ with LE SSERAFIM and KATSEYE. We love the contrast between that exhilarating energy and the timeless story of a relationship with mixed signals and confusing signs. The production thumps, thuds, and surrounds the member’s clear vocals, much like how a crush that was once fun and light is now getting lost in translation.
The songs on BREAK EVEN work together to examine a relationship’s breaking point, almost as if the members of ILLIT are detectives putting together a case file. Twinkly opener ‘Super In Love’ captures the realization that the person they love isn’t super in love with them, with a lyric that nods to their earlier crush anthem ‘Jellyous.’ ‘More’ precedes ‘You’re Under Arrest’ as an energetic moment of anger that draws from hyperpop for a fast-moving sound that matches the girls’ frantic feelings, crashing into the opening whistles of ‘Arrest.’ Finally, once their ex is in a jail in the back of their mind, ILLIT find someone new that makes their heart ‘Pop’ once again!
And we’ll serve as witnesses: ILLIT keep building their case file of proof that they’ll go down in history as undeniable K-Pop superstars. Not only is their music a thrill to listen to, but there’s clever world-building, from the mini-album’s sounds to details like an iced tea that goes back to their 2024 song ‘IYKYK (If You Know You Know).’ They’ve proven time and time again that they have the musical talent, performance skills, and charisma to keep stealing hearts and shining on the global stage.
