We can’t stop thinking about our experience at When We Were Young Fest 2024 and we’re ready to keep yapping about it for the foreseeable future. We joined the droves of emos flocking to Las Vegas on Thursday and Friday and were lucky enough to attend the annual WWWY Festival Sideshow held at the Brooklyn Bowl on the Friday night before day one of the festival. Beatbox and Idobi Radio hosted this year’s charity concert and bowling tournament and all proceeds went to Charity Bomb and MusiCares, two incredible organizations that deserve all of our support!
The lineup was stacked, the energy was high, the Shirley Temples were flowing, and it was all-around a great way to kick off the weekend. (Though we heard The Used’s show had a cartwheel competition so we’re only a little salty to have missed it). Cartwheels aside, Madina Lake, Boys Like Girls, and Simple Plan got us hyped for the night and for the rest of the weekend, so let’s talk highlights!

Madina Lake
Madina Lake brought the ENERGY to the Brooklyn Bowl with their set. This was our first time seeing them live and we had so much fun. One of our favorite parts of their set was the giant confetti-filled balloons being tossed around. They would periodically get popped by either the band or the fans and cover anyone in the immediate vicinity in a shower of confetti. We were a little stressed about a balloon popping near us, we cannot lie, but when it actually happened it was pretty cool to see. The band was zooming around on stage, jumping into the crowd, and all around encouraging everyone to get energetic and jump around. We loved the vibe of their set and we’re so glad we got to experience it.

Boys Like Girls
Our love for Boys Like Girls is no secret so we were super stoked that we got to see them not only during WWWYF itself but at this Charity Bomb show too. The Brooklyn Bowl turned into a time machine and Martin Johnson was driving b*tch (his words) right back to 2006. We got to hear ‘Heart Heart Heartbreak,’ we got to hear ‘Miracle,’ we took a journey down BLG lane and we’re still not over it. BLG always puts on a fantastic show and we love the banter and the energy every single time. Boys Like Girls being back is something that is actually so personal to us and having them be a part of our WWWYF experience made it 10x better.

Simple Plan
Simple Plan is an undeniable staple act in the scene, so of course, they graced the Brooklyn Bowl stage with their presence to kick off the weekend. The best way to get your adrenaline pumping at 10:30 p.m. is hearing the opening lines of ‘I’d Do Anything,’ and we can attest to that firsthand. Every time we get to see Simple Plan is a good time and we know each show will be better than the last. They really get better and better each year and we are so honored we got to capture their energy.

We had such an amazing time at the Charity Bomb show and it was so cool to attend something for a great cause. Every set was amazing, we were dancing and singing along all night, and we got sufficiently hyped for the rest of the weekend. If you’re planning on making your way out to Vegas for next year’s festival, you don’t want to miss out on this show!
