Is your music taste heavily inspired by dads everywhere with bands like The Cure and Nirvana? Or more Frank Ocean? What if we told you we had a record that effortlessly and flawlessly combines the two? The unique mix of classic rock and R&B that comes together to create Scarlet House’s debut record Homecoming is nothing short of brilliant. Among the heavy guitar riffs and the thought-provoking lyrics, it’s easy to get lost in the musical world that Scarlet House pulls us into. And amazingly, he doesn’t stop there. Not only can we close our eyes and escape into Scarlet House’s world, we can go there visually too. Woven through three music videos is the impeccable story of Homecoming, and we’d like to take a moment to take into each one.
‘Over’
Let us be very clear. We want you to watch these music videos, so we will not be over-explaining each one. In fact, we hope to give you just enough to leave you craving more. That being said, this is a genius introduction to our story. We’ll be looking at each in the order he released them in, which already makes the ‘Over’ that much more compelling. ‘Over’ is in the back half of the record and yet kicks off the visual storytelling. It’s a simple enough music video. Most of it consists of our singer performing in a field. But this song is about solitude. As he begs for someone that he desperately longs for, his only company is the fallen leaves and the colors of the sunset. He leaves us viewers wondering how he got to this point.
‘Alone’
And he doesn’t answer our questions in ‘Alone,’ the next music video to come out of Homecoming. But instead of standing still, he wanders and considers his own journey. He reflects on a past relationship, wondering why the other person has moved on while he still feels stuck. As he ponders this, we flash between a few different locations, always returning to the same wall. We can only guess at the significance of each location, but he’s moving towards something. Stepping away from the field and into the town, one can only imagine if it’s a step in the right direction or not. And one might hope we get more of a backstory in the next installment of the Homecoming saga.
‘Slowing Down’ / ‘Ghosts’
Surprise! We do get more information here. We really feel like we’ve been suffering through cliffhanger after cliffhanger while watching our favorite TV series, and we finally get the big reveal. The combination of these two songs feels like the final piece of the puzzle as we open on a mysterious girl. Scarlet House sings at a house party, and his eyes cut to her time and time again. And then we flash to the relationship we’ve been missing.
Act 1 of the two-part video, ‘Ghosts,’ talks about clinging to someone as they slip away. It is seamlessly merged with ‘Slowing Down,’ which seems to be a prequel to ‘Ghosts’. We hear more about the grinding halt that they came to, which launches Scarlet House into ‘Over’ and ‘Alone.’ Suddenly, everything makes sense. Was this girl ever really there at all? Or is he still chasing her ghost? We may never know.
But you might! Share your thoughts on this thrilling four-part series over on our socials. And let us know your favorite song on Homecoming at @thehoneypop on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
