As the weather gets colder and we’re transitioning from the Halloween mood into Christmas in a couple of months, what better way to get cozy than to find new movies and shows to watch on the couch wrapped up in a pile of blankets and pillows? But since we’re still influenced by Spooky Season, many of these will be spooky-themed.
Alien: Romulus
If you or anyone you know is a huge fan of the Alien franchise, we’re about to give you the perfect gift idea: a special limited edition VHS version of Alien: Romulus will be released on December 3 in celebration of the 45th anniversary of the legendary Alien franchise. Started in 1979, Alien is one of the most successful sci-fi franchises in the world, so much so that it is still going to this day with Romulus.
Set between the events of Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986), Alien: Romulus goes back to the franchise’s roots, showing us a group of young colonizers going to space and accidentally stumbling upon one of the deadliest life forms in the universe while scavenging the deep ends of a run-down space station.

Goosebumps: The Vanishing
Did you grow up reading the Goosebumps books? We did too! And did you know that Disney+ has an anthology-style series based on the books available for streaming on their platform? Well, now you do! Season one premiered last year and has five high schoolers as its main protagonists who are investigating the tragic death of a teenager three decades earlier, but that also brings out some secrets about their parents’ lives.
On to Season two, it’s time for twins Cece and Devin Brewer to take the spotlight when they find a threat hiding in their dad’s home in Gravesend, Brooklyn. The siblings keep pulling at the threads of this mystery until they eventually find themselves entangled in the story of the vanishing of five teens in 1994. Goosebumps: The Vanishing comes out on Disney+ and Hulu on January 10, and we cannot wait to see what comes next in the show.

Gladiator II
24 years after the first Gladiator, a sequel is finally upon us! Continuing the story from the original, this time we meet Lucius years after Maximus’ death as he’s being forced to enter the Colosseum. Why, you ask? Because his home was conquered by the tyrants who now rule Rome.
Now, faced with the complications of the present, Lucius must look to his past in order to find the strength to fight back and return the glory of Rome to its people. You can catch Gladiator II in cinemas later this month, on November 22.

Bad Sisters
Did you think we’d leave Apple TV+ out of this list? Never! And what better show to mention than Bad Sisters? This Irish dark humor series follows the story of the five Garvey sisters, Eva, Grace, Ursula, Bibi, and Becka. The five women all lead ordinary lives until the day they find themselves in the middle of a life insurance investigation after the death of Grace’s abusive husband, John Paul. From then, the series follows two timelines, one before John’s death, where the sisters are planning his murder, and another after the (not so) tragic moment, in which an insurance agent is incessantly trying to prove the Garvey women had something to do with the demise of their brother-in-law.
Season one came out in 2022, and now, in 2024, a new season brings us back to Dublin to meet the Garvey sisters two years after the “accident” that killed John Paul. There’s just one problem: even though they moved on, some ugly past truths are coming back to bite them, and the ladies are once again under the spotlight and must choose who they trust very carefully. The first two episodes premiere on Apple TV+ on November 13, with new ones coming out every Wednesday until December 25.

The Stanford Prison Experiment: Unlocking The Truth
If you enjoy reading about historical events and/or true crime, then you’ve probably heard about the Stanford Prison Experiment from 1971. In it, volunteers were put into a fake prison and assigned the roles of prisoners or guards as a way to see how their circumstances would affect them mentally during what should’ve been a two-week period but ended up being cut short after only six days. The professor responsible for the experiment, Philip Zimbardo, chose to end it early after being confronted by a psychologist who visited the facility and witnessed firsthand the psychological abuse the “prisoners” were suffering at the hands of the “guards.”
And now, over 50 years after the experiment, National Geographic has brought us a docuseries that pulled together archival footage and first-hand accounts from participants who had never spoken about their experience during those six days before. Unlocking The Truth even goes as far as showing us an interview with Dr. Philip Zimbardo himself about his highly criticized experiment. Catch the premiere of the first episode on NatGeo on November 13 or watch it on Hulu and Disney+ the next day.

Love Hurts
Who doesn’t love a dose of action in their Valentine’s Day movies? We definitely do, which is why we’re so excited for Love Hurts. From the same producers of The Fall Guy, Love Hurts brings Ke Huy Quan and Ariana DeBose as the main characters who are ex-partners. But not romantic partners; they used to be partners in crime until Marvin, played by Quan, left Rose, played by Ariana, behind to fend for herself.
Years later, Marvin now works as a realtor and pretends like his past never happened, but of course it would come back to bite him. Rose finds him again, and she’s not happy. Because of it, Marvin is thrown back into a world of hitmen and double crosses with danger in every corner. Oh, and his crime lord brother, Knuckles, is hunting him too. So it’s safe to say Marvin now has to confront his past head-on. Catch Love Hurts in theaters on February 7.
