You all know at this point how much we love and admire producers who work behind the scenes to make the music we listen to every single day. And every once in a while, those producers also happen to step into the spotlight to release their own musical projects and make us fall in love even more! That is the case for the main character of this article: Private Cinema is a singer-songwriter, producer and multidisciplinary artist from Beijing.
Over the years, she’s worked with some important names of the Asian entertainment industry, such as Lu Han, Chris Lee (Li Yuchun), Bibi Zhou, and SB19. As well as working on soundtracks for drama series Islands as well as ad campaigns in China.
After years behind the scenes, Renjin created Private Cinema and made her oficial debut with the Mirror Says… EP. Now, she is back with ‘Comfortably Lost,’ a song written three years ago, before Private Cinema was even a thing. Beyond being sonically stunning, the lyrics also feel like a warm hug when we need it most.
If you enjoy the likes of The Marías, Billie Eilish, Men I Trust, Beabadoobee and Sunset Rollercoaster, you’re pretty much guaranteed to enjoy the soft vocals and bedroom pop vibes of Private Cinema’s work. Renjin created this project as a creative outlet to have complete freedom and be able to express all of her artistic impulses as she sees fit, speaking of identity, self-reflection and the search for meaning in life, and we truly can feel that in every song.
‘Comfortably Lost’ was written by Renjin for her partner, depicting a love that makes you feel safe even when you’re not sure about much else in life. If the outside is too loud, having a person to pull you back and shield you from all the chaos is one of the best things we could possibly hope for, and ‘Comfortably Lost’ is a perfect expression of that feeling. And we love how the song doesn’t speak of a so-called perfect love, it feels real, she doesn’t need Prince Charming, she just needs someone to be the safe space she can run to when things get too much.
On the production side of things, we’re obsessed with how Private Cinema layers different types of sounds to create the atmosphere of this song. It combines bedroom pop, soft rock and indie sensibilities by using both noisy guitars (a nod to the chaos of the outside world and the noise inside our own heads) with her soft vocals filled with a dark reverb that make the song sound almost suspended from reality. It’s contradictory and perfectly simple to understand at the same time, being lost but never abandoned, of feeling uncertain but held by the person you care about most.
Private Cinema’s artistry is guided by Henri Matisse’s belief that “creativity takes courage.” It’s got much more to do with presence than performance, putting everyday life and emotions on a magnifying glass that makes us feel seen and heard, like we can find our own personal stories within hers.
