Something about this book gives off Gravity Falls vibes, which is a huge part of why we loved reading it. Here are a few signs you’ll enjoy reading Tanya Huff’s Direct Descendant!

Book Overview: Direct Descendant
Content warnings: death, murder, violence, blood, corpses, and weapons (Read at your discretion!)
Summary: Generations ago, the founders of the idyllic town of Lake Argen made a deal with a dark force. In exchange for their service, the town will stay prosperous and successful, and keep outsiders out. And for generations, it’s worked out great. Until a visitor goes missing, and his wealthy family sends a private investigator to find him, and everything abruptly goes sideways.
Now, Cassidy Prewitt, town baker and part-time servant of the dark force (it’s a family business) has to contend with a rising army of darkness, a very frustrated town, and a very cute PI who she might just be falling for…and who might just be falling for her. And if they can survive their own home-grown apocalypse, they might even just find happiness together.
You Enjoy Sapphic Love Stories
More than a cozy horror novel, Direct Descendant also has a sapphic romance between Cassidy “Cassie” Prewitt and Melanie Solvich. Cassie is the town baker and a servant to the Dark force protecting the town. Melanie is the private investigator in town looking for the missing Travis Brayden. They cross paths and quickly fall for each other. Cassie shares only part of what she knows about Travis without outing her identity as the Mouth/Voice. But things take an angsty turn when Melanie learns about the town’s history.
You Love Small-Town Lore
Speaking of the town’s history: nothing is as it seems in Lake Argen. If you love small-town lore, then you’ll love Direct Descendant. Set in modern-day Toronto, this book takes us into the heart of a small town. Yes, everyone knows everyone else’s business. And yes, few things can be kept secret. We were as shocked as Melanie was when Cassie shares the truth behind the town’s silver mine, her family’s wealth, and the reason for the perpetually good cell service.
Truly a lovely read, Direct Descendant by Tanya Huff balances the uncanny, eldritch horrors with cozy, small-town vibes.
