It’s no secret that we are some of Bearings’ biggest fans, so of course, we had to give you a rundown of our 5 favorite songs that you need on your playlist!
‘So Damn Wrong’
There are not enough words on the planet to describe our love for ‘So Damn Wrong.’ Trust us, when you get familiar with it, this song will have you screaming and punching the roof of your car (we’re speaking from experience).
Upon first listen, you’ll probably be drawn in by Ryan Culligan’s insane guitar skills, but keep listening! The band takes you on an emotional journey with this one. It may sound happy and fun, but those lyrics will have you reaching for the tissue box in no time.
Bearings are notorious for making us feel absolutely insane with the mix of upbeat instrumentals with some of the most devastating lyrics you’ve ever heard. Like, come on, “Just tell me the truth, was I ever enough?” Just ouch. But we’ll never get enough of it!
‘Makeshift’
This throwback to Nothing Here is Permanent is a heavy one, but as a fan favorite, we had to include it.
Dougie Cousins, lead singer, has been extremely open about the passing of his father, but this song really puts us into his world and exactly how it felt for him. There’s this feeling of begging and pleading for it not to be true, but Dougie also touches on the other side of grief: how all-consuming it can be.
With lyrics like “Caught myself shaking in the floor / Unsure of the thoughts I can’t ignore” and “I’ll remember every word you said / Like it was only yesterday,” this song really immerses you into the heavy loneliness that only grief can bring. And as devastating as the song is, we just can’t stop listening to it.
We’re also still waiting for it to make its appearance on a Bearings setlist (please Bearings, we’re begging).
‘Slip’
It wouldn’t be a list of our favorites if we didn’t include one of the singles from The Best Part About Being Human!
‘Slip’ fuses the organic pop-punk sound we have come to know and love with Dougie’s mind-blowing vocals. Our favorite part of this song has got to be the bridge, because just look at these lyrics:
“And If I wrote every word in red
And every second felt permanent
Would you believe everything I said?
I could let you in, I could let you…”
Bearings tap into these deep human emotions, really showcasing the desire to feel loved and wanted, even when you feel like no matter what you do, you’re going to ruin something special. It’s a fight between wanting to be open and allow yourself to be seen fully, or draw back and hide, ultimately destroying what could’ve been.
‘Stuck in a Doorframe’
The title of this one says it all: we’re talking about feeling stuck. Whenever you’re feeling like you can’t move forward, that your past is anchoring you down, that you haven’t grown, this is the song you need to turn on.
The metaphor here is extremely relatable for anyone who has dealt with a life-changing event. You can’t step back and lock yourself into your past; you know that’s not productive. However, you just can’t seem to move forward and close the door on that chapter of your life either. Bearings do an outstanding job putting these difficult human experiences into words that just mean so much to us.
This song comes from their Blue in the Dark album, and trust us, you are going to feel blue and in the dark. But you’re also going to feel seen, and what more could we ask for from this band?
‘Shaking Your Mind’
Now, we’ve delved a lot into the deep lyricism of Bearings, but let’s finish off with their other side: upbeat, dance-worthy bangers. ‘Shaking Your Mind’? More like shaking your A**.
This song has become a Bearings setlist staple, and it’s clear to see why. When the band isn’t making us grab our tissue box, they’re giving us feel-good tunes that flow deep into our bones. We promise you’ll be ready to put this one on full blast, driving down the highway with the windows down. As the warmer weather creeps in, we think this will be a big one to add to that summer playlist.
Which of these songs are your favorite to put on blast? And what other Bearings songs have you feeling all of the feels?! Let us know in the comments! Or, you can always swing over to Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter and chat with us about it there.
