Every cover that mgk releases absolutely rocks our world, but we think his latest one seems to be an all-time fan favorite already! He recruited Julia Wolf for a passionate, angsty take on The Goo Goo Dolls’ classic ‘Iris,’ and it’s even received a cosign from The Goo Goo Dolls themselves on Twitter. Complete with stunning harmonies, haunting vocals, and a captivating video by EST’s favorite director, Sam Cahill, ‘Iris’ will keep you hooked through every note.

To celebrate mgk’s recent covers and versatility, let’s imagine some of our dream covers for him to do in the future! Colson, if you’re reading this: you’re welcome for the fantastic ideas.
My Chemical Romance – ‘Famous Last Words’
From the moment we heard the “sunset on my black parade” lyric on ‘hangover cure’ in 2020, we instantly started hoping for some kind of mgk x MCR interaction or musical moment! Our thought process behind ‘Famous Last Words’ is a bit of a sappy one, but stick with us. ‘Famous Last Words’ is one of MCR’s most beloved songs partly because of the uplifting “I am not afraid to keep on living, I am not afraid to walk this world alone” lyric. Meanwhile, part of why mgk is so beloved is that he’s so real in his lyrics, encouraging others to keep believing in themselves and pushing through hard times. That, and this song is just perfect in general.
Post Malone – ‘Hollywood’s Bleeding’
Colson and Post Malone are two of the most versatile artists out there, seamlessly blurring the lines between genres like hip-hop, rock, country, and pop. After all this time, we definitely need some kind of cover to hold us over until they officially get in the studio together! Our pick would be ‘Hollywood’s Bleeding’ since it talks about some of the darker aspects of fame, like mgk has on albums like mainstream sellout. We can practically already hear him near-screaming a nice “Hollywood’s bleeding…” before jumping into his smoother register for “but we call it home.”
Sleep Token – ‘Granite’
Speaking of blending genres, we think Sleep Token would be an amazing match for mgk to do a cover of! They draw inspiration from all sorts of areas of music and turn it into something you wouldn’t expect from a hard rock band. We’d choose the iconic ‘Granite’ for Kells to put his spin on! He’d get to show off some of his emotive vocals in the first section, maybe throw in a little rap verse, then let his rockstar side take center stage during the guitar breakdown. And if he wanted to do a little mashup cover like he did with Juice WRLD’s ‘Empty Out Your Pockets,’ maybe he could throw in a bit of ‘Waste Love?’ The two songs feel like opposite perspectives of a crumbling relationship and it’d be so fun to hear him build a story out of them!
Taylor Swift ft. Post Malone – ‘Fortnight’
You didn’t think we’d make this list without including a Taylor Swift song, did you? As if! Taylor would be one of our dream mgk collabs, so one of our dream Taylor collabs is a natural pick for the last cover on this list. Part of what makes ‘Fortnight’ so haunting is how much raw feeling Taylor and Post both put into the song, culminating in that epic “thought of calling ya, but you won’t pick up…” breakdown. Colson could definitely match that energy and possibly put his own spin on it with a special guitar solo!
