Is it too ‘cliché’ to say that few things in life make us as happy as seeing mgk happy? Either way, we’re saying it. He radiates upbeat, summer-ready joy on ‘cliché,’ the new single from his upcoming album! After teasing that the next song he released would be pop in his ‘Bye Bye Bye’ freestyle a few weeks ago, ‘cliché’ delivers the summer pop bop we’ve been waiting for, complete with a fun, choreographed music video that would put even your favorite ‘90s boy band to shame.
“You should run away with me, even if you’re better off alone,” mgk invites, with a line that feels like a lighter version of the “I get insecure and panic ‘cause I know you’re too pure for this” lyric from ‘twin flame.’ The insecurities he faces in love may still be there, but he’s able to push past them enough to take the jump and make a move anyway. It’s a return to the exhilarating, in-the-moment attitude he showed off on ‘bloody valentine’ as well – “I know this night might be our last” offers a direct parallel to “let’s play pretend and treat this night like it’ll happen again,” but with more self-awareness.
This new chapter is already making history in the mgk books, because it earned Kells his first-ever cover placement on Spotify’s weekly New Music Friday playlist! He celebrated in true Girl Dad form in an adorable video he posted, immediately calling his oldest, Casie, to tell her the news and holding in his screams because her baby sister was sleeping.
‘cliché’ seems to give us a few hints on what we can expect from mgk’s next album, and we’re buzzing thinking about all the possibilities. First, there’s the versatility between genres – mgk doesn’t just stand for Machine Gun Kelly, it also stands for Multi-Genre King. Next, the car wash and motel settings in the video give us a cool, on-the-go setting that might tie into this era’s aesthetic. And finally, drumroll please… the merch line miiiight confirm the album title that he’s been dangling over our heads! The tagline on the “smoking kills” t-shirt reads “lost a——-a,” while one of the titles fans have guessed the most is Lost Americana.
