Listening to Your Favorite Color’s new single, ‘Forever,’ it’s easy to feel like we really will live forever. With high-energy guitar throughout the whole song, a euphoric chorus, it feels just like being on top of the world. And it’s the perfect introduction to Your Favorite Color as a band. Fresh off their debut For You and electric performances supporting The Driver Era on tour, we had to chat with them about everything they have going on. Introducing Your Favorite Color
Welcome to The Honey POP, we’re so excited to chat with you! To start off, we figured we’d try something fun. The band name comes from the idea that every song has its own “color” or mood. If each member had to pick a color that represents their personality or musical style, what would it be and why?
We get this all the time! Obviously because of our band name, hahah. To be honest, we don’t perceive our name quite so literally. I think each member interprets the name in their own way. Like you mentioned, we feel that the word “color” can be used to describe or interpret feelings, moods, or flavors. Every member’s contribution of vibe is dynamic and ever changing, but typically David our guitarist brings darker tones to our sound, Matt our singer tends to give uplifting warm melodies, Nicky our keyboardist brings quirk and style with his synthesizers, Foz our drummer brings high energy with explosive drum tones, and our bassist Cameron is a Swiss Army knife full of surprises being a multi-instrumentalist.
Matt said identity is a huge theme for the group. As you have released your debut album (congratulations!) and continue to release more music, do you think you’ve found your identity as Your Favorite Color?
Thank you! It’s true that “a search for identity and belonging” was a large theme in the first record. We have explored many different avenues musically and our first record was a collection of music that we felt belonged together as our first “statement” as artists. As we have explored and released our debut album we have definitely grown more confident in ourselves and reached a sense of identity that we are proud of. That being said, as people and musicians we are always evolving. Who knows what new identities lay ahead for us, but discovering the unknown is the fun part about being a musician.
‘Forever’
‘Forever’ is a perfect song for the summer! Can you talk about what inspired the song and what the creative process was like?
We wrote ‘Forever’ during the soundcheck at our last stop on tour in EU+UK with The Driver Era. It’s sometimes hard to pinpoint where inspiration for songs comes from exactly. A lot of the time when we sit down to write, the songs gain a mind of their own and guide our own hands so to speak. If I had to guess, I would say that ‘Forever’ came from the ecstatic energy we felt while being on tour. Waking up every day in another country and roaring fans felt like a dream. I feel like the energy behind Forever was potentially born from that experience.
You’ve mentioned how ‘Forever’ is about chasing the moment and living without fear. That feels like a personal motto of sorts. Are there any other thoughts/values/beliefs that you all live by?
Collectively, we all value embracing the moments we find ourselves in good or bad. Time moves fast and it will be over before we know it. Let’s make the most of our time while we are here on this earth and strive to become the greatest and loving versions of ourselves.
‘Forever’ and ‘Bleach’ are the first tracks you’ve put out since releasing your debut album For You last year. Is there anything you took away from that experience that you’re doing differently this time around?
This time around we are looking to find the next evolution of our sound. That will include tones and emotions we haven’t tapped into before. Also, lyrically guiding our songs to tell more vivid stories rather leaning so hard into vague metaphors will be a big one.
Creative Decisions and Inspiration
You’re a group of close friends who’ve grown up together. How does that friendship translate into your music and creative decision-making?
I think it has everything to do with why our band works the way it does. All of us have been together for so long now that it often feels like we can read each other’s minds especially when writing. This is helpful when it comes to tapping into a sort of flow that doesn’t require too much problem solving and verbal communication. Although, communication is very important. At the end of the day we all respect one another greatly which keeps us in balance with one another.
When writing for your debut album, you took a trip to Joshua Tree where the track ‘For You’ came together. How do particular environments influence your sound and your songwriting process?
Sometimes writing in new environments can bring fresh senses of inspiration. I think being in the hot desert has a strong feeling attached to it. Also, there is a freeing feeling of getting away from everyday routine to specifically embrace creative expression.
You mentioned your sonic inspirations (groups from the eighties to the early ‘00s). However, we were wondering: Are there any contemporaries that have your attention and you might want to collaborate with?
We are always open to collaborating with any artist. The process of creating and pushing boundaries any way we can is exciting to us and collaborating is a way those doors can open to new and refreshing sounds. That being said we all enjoy new electronic based music and it’s a good time for pop and electronic music like Charli XCX and The Dare.
Visualizers are a major part of any musical group/band. How do you all decide on what the perfect visualizer looks like?
Perfect is a scary word haha. I’d say that our visualizers come from the images we see in our minds when we close our eyes and listen to the song. The finished product doesn’t always come out exactly the way we planned, but that’s also when we find the unexpected magic moments.

Looking Forward
You released ‘Hold Me Now’ after reaching 10,000 followers on Instagram. How does it feel to have grown to over 15,000 followers? What are you keeping in mind as your audience grows and your music reaches more ears?
It’s amazing to gain such strong supporters of YFC. It’s one of the biggest reasons we make music. Finding those who connect with us is the peak emotion. We hope to continue spreading our name and sound.
You finished touring with The Driver Era! Is there anything you learned from the experience that you will incorporate into Your Favorite Color’s journey?
The biggest thing we learned was that we had it in us to survive on the road for two months, haha. We also learned that our music translated the way we had hoped it would, if not better, across the world.
