Does anyone else desperately need a summer vacation? We at THP could always use a book to take to the beach. Luckily for us, Allison Brennan’s new novel, Beach Reads and Deadly Deeds, is just the vibe we need.
Beach Reads and Deadly Deeds follows Mia Crawford, an accountant on a trip to a private island resort. What was supposed to be a relaxing weeklong trip in St. Claire celebrating her work anniversary turns into a murder mystery she tries to solve.
A complex mystery with an added romance element, we finished reading this book in a single day. Here are three things we love about Beach Reads and Deadly Deeds by Allison Brennan!

Book Overview: Beach Reads And Deadly Deeds
Content warnings: death, murder, strangulation, corpses, kidnapping
Summary: Mia Crawford is responsible to a fault. She has to be. Between her high-demand job and taking care of her grandmother and her cats, she has little time for anything else. What time she does have, she pours into reading. Mysteries, romances, thrillers…books filled with women who are far more impulsive than she would ever dream of being. Now, forced into taking a long-overdue vacation, she finds herself on a luxurious private island where she just might have a chance to reinvent herself—for a little while, anyway. She can explore the island. Flirt shamelessly with a cute bartender. Have a vacation fling. Live like a heroine in one of her favorite novels.
Or she can curl up with a good book on the beach. Turns out reinventing yourself is easier planned than done. But when gossipy notes written in the margins of an old book turn out to be clues to the disappearance of another guest, Mia finds herself diving headfirst into a dangerous adventure. With everyone at the resort hiding secrets of their own, she’ll have to solve this real-life mystery before she becomes the next target.
It’s Romantic And Mysterious
It has been far too long since we’ve read a romantic mystery. Beach Reads and Deadly Deeds is about to bring us back into the genre! Mia tries to uncover the mystery of Diana Harden’s disappearance that quickly turns into a murder investigation. She also becomes romantically involved with the resort’s bartender, Jason Mallory. Their romance keeps getting interrupted by new developments in the case. But the delays were well worth the wait!
Mia’s Detective Work
Like us, Mia loves reading and often applies what she reads to her life in Beach Reads and Deadly Deeds. When she comes across all the notes that Diana left behind in her beach read, she uses her book knowledge to decode Diana’s messages. Mia also pays attention to details a lot more closely than others, allowing her to connect the codes to certain resort guests. She eventually uncovers potential blackmail and secret files that people would kill for (literally).
A Satisfying Ending
You would expect the end of the murder mystery to be the end of Beach Reads and Deadly Deeds. But wait, there’s more! Mia also grapples with accepting her pending promotion and securing the future of her career versus taking a risk and opening her own business. Thanks to her romance with Jason, she discovers more of herself and her passions. There is, of course, some angst before we get to the lovely end. But we expected our main characters would have to work for their happily ever after.
Allison Brennan’s Beach Reads and Deadly Deeds is a satisfying romantic mystery that not only solves a murder investigation but also a character’s existential crisis.
