mgk’s lost americana era is already to die for! From the upbeat, dancefloor-ready anthem ‘cliché’ to the newly-released, thoughtful ‘vampire diaries,’ Kells is giving us so much incredible music already and we’re so ready to feed on the album when it drops on August 8th. Listening to these songs isn’t enough, we need them injected into our bloodstream immediately so we can spend all of eternity with them. Too many vampire puns? Sorry, let’s get to it and discuss ‘vampire diaries’ :’)
Where ‘cliché’ was (sometimes misleadingly) sunny, ‘vampire diaries’ takes us to the darker side as mgk explores his struggles through the lens of a vampire – you could interpret it as him talking about fame or even sobriety, which he’s been open about pursuing lately. He can’t go into the sunlight, can’t drink what he wants, or show his true self without feeling like a monster of sorts. And that brings us to a special lyric we want to focus on:
I was born to fly but, baby, I would die to run…
mgk on ‘vampire diaries’
Tying into the supernatural themes, vampires fly, of course. We’ve seen that “hold on tight, spider monkey” scene in Twilight enough times to recite it word for word, after all! But the genius of mgk often lies beneath the surface and this is the perfect example of that.
‘vampire diaries’ uses the vampire metaphor as Kells describes his itch to live a more normal, mundane life. He knows he’s destined to “fly” and reach career heights that many people don’t even let themselves dream about, but he’s given up so much in the process. He “can’t leave ‘til it’s nighttime” because it’s so easy for paparazzi and even just average people with phones to make his location known in only a few minutes. Even if he “tried to find a silver lining,” there are so many downsides to fame that he’s been quite vocal about over the years, including hearing a million outside opinions about who you are and having less privacy.
There also seems to be a little Easter egg for longtime fans to figure out – did you catch it? We think this line might nod to mgk’s 2012 song ‘Runnin’,’ which talks about being tired of a certain lifestyle but knowing that you have to push through it to get to where you want to go. We’re now hearing from the mgk who did keep running and broke through to superstardom, but might miss certain things about those days of pursuing the things he loved before becoming a household name.
“I’ve worn my soles out to the point that my toes is out
To the point that I can’t look back
And even if I did, couldn’t see where I started out…”
And on a more universal level, you can take the vampire theme as a metaphor for depression or similar struggles. Depression might lead you to feel outcast and alone even if you know your worth and ability to “fly” deep down. It’s so easy to long for a different life in which you could just “run” and live like the people around you always seem to. But just like how being a vampire leads to gaining unique powers, there are strengths that dealing with such feelings can give you. Going through hard times shows how strong you truly are, can expand your empathy, and allows you to appreciate the small, sometimes boring, things in life when you start feeling more open to them again.
